Biography

As an artist, I've been influenced by a number of thinkers and writers, as well as by musicians. My perspective as a songwriter is partly due to my training as a biologist. I received a bachelor’s degree in genetics and a doctorate in neurobiology before dedicating myself to a career in music.

My musical influences range from Bob Dylan, to Sam Cooke, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen, and Eric Satie.

One Step Away

One Step Away

We were lost in a crowd
on a clear day
the veils fell and
the faces turned away
I held an ear to the heat and
there was no sound
the thoughts fold you up
and then burn you down

Now the people come at me
in columns and rows
their skulls all glow
with ancient, electrical wire
I'd show you my face but I can't find it in all this desire
and now I'm just
one step away from the fire
one step away from the fire

You can lead me there beside you but I won't stay
you can call me up but
my eyes are turning away
I'm through to the heat, oh I can see it right now
my thoughts fold you up
and then burn you down

And my smile explodes
in fragments of rain
the drops go down you and
then they go rolling away
one of em loves you and one of em's trying to climb a little higher
and one of em's just
one step away from the fire (3x)

But it goes so slow, so slow, so slowŠ
Feed me, sell me, go where you go
the sun is up now, and the rules here insist on being followed
all the way to the heat we'll go, we'll go right now
fold yourself inside me
like a warm sound

Now the people come at me in columns and rows
their skulls all glow
with ancient, electrical wire
I'd show you my face but I can't find it in all this desire
and still I'm one, just
one step away from the fire (5x)

Oh I clean my clothes and
I shine my shoes
but still I'm one step away from you

Not Now, Not Ever

Not Now, Not Ever

We were over
near the border of your town
tryin' to find a way to
get to the ocean
My sail went up, and you were
moving closer to the ground
you're not fooling around
you're so alone, so often

You are my fortune
you hold me up and
you shake me down
and then, straight behind me
I hear the whistle blow

But I don't wanna go
not now, not ever
I just wanna sail with you for home
move into the light
or fly like a feather
on a moonless night
but back there I won't go
not now, not ever

You were over
near the heart of me
I pulled off your armor
and I filled it with wine
I drank from yours
and you drank from mine
I was way out of line
and now I'm so full, so often

You are my fortune
you hold me up and you
shake me down
and then, straight behind me
I hear the whistle blow

But I don't wanna go
not now, not ever
I just wanna sail with you for home
move into the light
or fly like a feather
on a moonless night
but back there I won't go

No I don't wanna go
not now, not ever
I wanna sail with you for home
move into the light
or fly like a feather
on a moonless night
but back there I won't go
not now, not ever

Something woke me in the night
turned up the light
slipped through the border
and then split me in two
it walked out the door
and then it called me
and I said

I don't wanna go
not now, not ever
I wanna sail with you for home
move into the light
or fly like a feather
on a moonless night
but back there I won't go
not now, not ever
I don't wanna go
Not now, not ever

In the Mirror

Written By: John Montgomery

In the Mirror
©1999 John Montgomery

I met you in the mountains
where there once was a river
you lived right near me
on the corner near a foundry
you stepped so softly
you were too faint to hear
and as I drove away
I saw you in the mirror

From the dark of the doorway
you flew down beside me
your hair swirled all around me
your body in a fever
you should've been in the movies
I saw you in the mirror

And I was up and over then
but I wasn't any nearer
now you're far away
and I see you much clearer

The time flew all around us
and one day we were walking
walking through the fountains
outside the theatre
and the spray fractured the air
like cracks in a mirror

And I was up and over then
but I wasn't any nearer
now you're far away
and I see you much clearer

And then you said you
couldn't help thinking
thinking quite often
of someone far away
and I said nothing
you said that you loved me
but I did not believe you

now you're far away
and I see you much clearer
I see you much clearer
when I look in the mirror
