Johnny Lima – Livin' Out Loud – Shock Pop Records – Forgive me Johnny Lima. This is nearly a year old now (WTF?), but I have to make up for the lateness of this review with some high praise. Johnny is one guy that just gets it. He knows what he is good at. He knows what fans want. And he knows how to update his sound a little without abandoning his core beliefs. Livin' Out Loud is one of the smoothest pure melodic rock records you'll hear. It just purrs along and is done before you know it. High energy guitar driven pop/melodic rock here, the kind of tunes that Bon Jovi and Def Leppard might be pumping out if they never grew up. Moody in places, happy go lucky elsewhere. This is still a great album after all these months and if you had any doubts, re-think them right now. Essential for melodic rock fans. - Andrew McNeice

"Rush on Rock"

Johnny Lima – Livin’ Out Loud (Shock Pop Music)

Don’t buy this if you don’t like Def Leppard. But if you do then dive right in. It’s no criticism of Lima that he’s managed to capture the Sheffield crew circa 1987 right across this mightily impressive album – in fact quite the opposite. Livin’ Out Loud is a slick piece of polished hair metal guaranteed to get inside your head and put a smile on your face – unless you worship at the church of Kurt Cobain.

Tracks like I’m On Fire and Somebody To Love are straight out of the Leppard songbook and it’s almost uncanny how close to the NWOBHM legends this album gets. Layered guitars and over-produced harmonies maintain the trend but the impeccable production and overriding feelgood factor mean that the blatant similarities matter little.

It’s impossible to dislike this record. And very easy to rate it one of the best of an increasingly impressive bunch in 2009.

Biography
Whoever said "Rock is Dead" obviously forgot to mention its demise to Johnny Lima. After hearing his latest CD, Livin' Out Loud, it's clear that Lima sure as hell didn't get the message. The album showcases a more guitar-oriented approach than Lima's previous releases, or as one reviewer put it, "12 stunning new songs! His new stuff sounds dirtier, catchier and rougher than everything else before."

Born to Portuguese immigrants in a small town in central California, Lima got his first taste of Rock-n-Roll at the tender age of four, when his parents let him stay up late one night to catch KISS on a TV show. Little did they know that it was that one band, on that one TV show, that would convince their child that all he was meant to do in his life was to Rock 'N Roll All Night. At the age of 12, his parents finally gave in and bought him his first guitar, "I was too impatient to 'learn' the guitar the proper way. I wanted to get down to writing songs the minute I picked up the guitar for the first time", said Lima. "And I'm glad that was the approach I took. To this day, I still meet guitar players that blow me away with their technique, but they can't write a song to save their life."

A few years later, Lima took his acquired songwriting and vocal talents north to the San Francisco Bay Area in search of the ultimate rock band. After fronting a couple of popular local Bay Area bands, Johnny decided it was time to take it to the next level. By doing so, he'd have to do it alone. After spending a few years on his own, honing his songwriting skills, Johnny entered the studio to record his debut solo album. In 1996 his debut album was independently released worldwide. A brave move, considering the musical climate had changed drastically and rock music with hooks and harmonies was now out of fashion with the mainstream. However, it was an album that over ten years later would command upwards of $80 on eBay, since it was out of print only two years after its release.

Although the music business wasn't kind to him in his own backyard, across the Atlantic, Lima's style of music was still respected and garnered the attention of many labels in Europe including, Now and Then Productions in England, who signed him to a production deal in 1998. A year later, the follow-up to his debut album, Shine On, was released by Italy's Frontiers Records. The album earned rave reviews all over the world, including a perfect score in Scream Magazine and Majestic Magazine. Lima was also invited to perform at the annual Gods of AOR show in England in 1999 and 2000. "The Gods Festival was the largest crowd I had ever played for. They were blown away by me and I was blown away by them. It was an amazing experience that showed me my music was in demand", says Lima of the 1999 performance.

In 2001, Johnny began his work on his biggest selling CD to date. Released by Frontiers Records in 2003, Made in California was an album that showcased Lima's knack for big hooks, big vocals, and was the perfect soundtrack to any rock fan's summer. The CD also featured the song, "The Chosen One" which was co-written by Ted Poley, of the early nineties rock hit makers, Danger Danger. "Ted was super cool to work with and Made in California was my breakthrough album. I still get e-mails every week about "Something About You" being a wedding song for a fan somewhere in the world".
