Johnny Michael opens for pop group Danity Kane; rockin' marching band coming to Visalia

Staff and wire reports
Whatever your musical tastes — be it jazz, hip-hop or marching bands — there’s some interesting live music options next week in and around Tulare County.

Hometown guy
If you’re heading out to the Danity Kane concert Friday at the Kings County Fair, make sure you get to the concert early.

That’s because Golden West High School graduate and R&B-hip hop performer Johnny Michael is set to open the concert for the pop group.

Michael is touring in support of his debut album, “The Freak Show,” which is scheduled to hit stores later this year.

Choices caught up with the Southern California-based Michaels to talk about what’s happening in his burgeoning music career and growing up in Visalia.

Besides establishing his own record label — JM Records — he co-owns a men’s clothing line, DUV International. His goal with the label is to help young artists from the Central Valley get started in the recording industry, Michael said.

“There’s a lot of talent in the 559 [area code],” he said. “The area is like the step-child no one listens to. One of my missions is to change that.”

Michaels describes his music as uplifting and fun — and definitely aimed at a specific audience.

“I definitely cater to the ladies,” he said.

He counts Prince and Smokey Robinson as two of his biggest musical influences, Michaels said.

Michaels credits a lot of his success to his education in Visalia, where he was active in his high school’s choir.

“I’m proud of growing up in Visalia,” he said. “It was a great place to grow up.”

Michael expects to see lots of family and friends at concert.

“I love coming back performing close to home,” he said. “And there’s nothing better than getting the home crowd going.”

Details: Johnny Michael opens for Danity Kane Friday at the Kings County Fair. The concert starts at 7 p.m. Admission to the concert only is $24. It’s $6 more if you want to attend the fair, too. The fairgrounds are at 801 S. 10th Ave., Hanford. The fair opens at 5 p.m. Friday and closes at midnight.
