"Smooth Jazz Therapy: Spotlight On - Johnny Sandoval"

APRIL 04, 2013
Spotlight On - Johnny Sandoval

‘Istanblu’ by percussionist Johnny Sandoval has a title that explains basically all you need to know about this funky, sometimes extravagantly jazzy track. It reflects the experiences that Johnny's gained while touring in Istanbul, Turkey for three months and playing in Turkish Flamenco band Istwest. Of course those in the know will make the connection between Sandoval and Greg Adams’ recent creation East Bay Soul, in which Johnny has a pivotal role. His own band, @conga, provides music that has been described elsewhere as a blend of international rhythms, jazz, and melody.

In fact ‘Istanblu’ is the first single from the debut self titled CD by this feisty collective that comprises artists with whom Sandoval regularly works, most often in the Los Angeles area.

Trumpeters Chris Tedesco, Greg Adams and fellow East Bay Soul band member Lee Thornburg and are joined by sax-men George Shelby, Glen Berger, and Ed Wynne. Jim McMillen weighs in on trombone while the band is further complemented by guitars from Mike Romo, Fino Roverato, Bobby Solakov and Alfredo Caceres, the bass of Rene Camacho and Keith Jones plus Bernie Dresel on drums. - Smooth Jazz Therapy
