Bio
After getting his hands on a copy of A Tribe Called Quest's "Low End Theory", John began producing hip-hop beats at the age of 13. Five years later, John Roman's drive and passion for hip-hop remains constant and through his hard work, he has gained a maturity in his music few producers reach in a career, let alone at 18. John's influences and listening show a great appreciation and understanding for all genres -- from hip-hop to jazz to folk to indie. This broad musical consciouness has influenced him to push the boundaries of conventional hip-hop and provided an obsession with finding a new sound. John has also worked as a paid DJ; spinning house and techno.
Big John has also been MC'ing and songwriting for four years. Lyrically, his work extends beyond hip-hop cliches and punchlines. John's socially-conscious style focuses on universal themes and human relationships. This creative and distinct style was recognized by the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) in 2004 with 2nd place in the Teen Lyrics category, and again in 2005 with a 1st place award.
