"Song Competition Winner"

JOHN SHERRY SCORES TWICE IN INTERNATIONAL CONTEST

Monterey guitarist/songwriter/composer John Sherry recently received the honor of twice placing in the VH-1 Song of the Year songwriting contest (http://www.songoftheyear.com). Song of the Year is an international songwriting competition supporting VH-1’s Save the Music Foundation. The Song of the Year judges are some of the biggest names in music including many Grammy Award winners.

Song of the Year is excited to recognize John for his exceptional songwriting ability for the songs “Sure Had a Good Run” and “Letters Home.” “Good Run” received an Honorable Mention, which indicates the song impressed a number of the judges. “Letters Home” was awarded the Runner-Up category, indicating that it was one of the highest rated songs that did not make it into the top five picks. John competed against songwriters from all over the world for this honor. When asked what inspired these songs John replied, “‘Good Run,’ is about the passing of a great American musical icon, Johnny Cash.” He continued, “The idea for ‘Letters Home’ came to me from watching soldiers on the news read their individual letters home on camera. I wanted to focus on the human experience of soldiers and their families, and leave the politics out.” The lyrics for “Good Run” were written by John’s wife, Joyce Sherry, an award winning playwright. The team co-wrote the lyrics for “Letters Home.”

Currently John is concentrating on his songwriting and solo performing career while hoping to expand his work in film scoring. “I have done several compositions for stage and film, and I’ve found it very exciting and fulfilling work to do,” John notes. “Still, performing is such a part of me, it would be hard to leave behind.”

"John Sherry’s New CD Worthy of Pride"

John Sherry’s New CD Worth of Pride:

The John Sherry Group has a new album that rocks, rolls, cries and celebrates.
Titled “Don’t Let the Fire Go Out,” the CD is produced by Sherry’s Taylor Street Productions and features songs written jointly by the guitarist and his wife, Joyce.
There’s also a wonderful cover of Lennon and McCartney’s “Blackbird.”
It’s a solid ten song album that embraces various human emotions: egotism, loss, joy, hope, love.
The title song, “Don’t Let the Fire Go Out,” a line from the play “The Skin of Our Teeth,” expresses the courage to go on in spite of life’s bruises and frustrations:
“The whole world is at sixes and sevens
At the peak of our lives we’re in the clutches of death.
We’ve rattled along hot and cold for some time now
But we whisper our hope with every breath.”
“Just Yesterday” speaks of the music of guitarist Jimi Hendrix:
“Just yesterday
You were playing ‘Purple Haze’
Have our dreams all been forsaken?
Everything has changed
Blues guitars are up in flames
You took us there.”
The cover of “Blackbird” is done with three voices that are over-dubbed giving it a chorus-like effect that works nicely.
This album is Sherry’s fourth, the second with his band.
Sherry has been working on the album for one-and-a-half years and is pleased with the product. “I’m the happiest with this CD. This is my best work to date. I’m very pleased and I think it communicates. That’s my hope.”
Among those appearing on the album are Ramon Vallejo, who is co-producer, on lead vocals and keyboard; Gary Kehoe, Kim Edmundson, and John E. Sample on drums. Sherry plays guitar and some bass and adds vocals.
Joyce Sherry designed the cover - Salinas, Californian
