"Jolly Molly"

Many may say Dylan Wise is unique, odd, or weird. Though those words do describe Dylan I would also have to say he is a like a breath of fresh air and so is his music. Dylan is a freshman at Marist studying radio, TV, Film. He is both a solo artist and in the band Jolly Molly, who recently signed with Blue Duck Records. Blue Duck Records is run by Brad Freeman, a Marist College Professor who after teaching and befriending Dylan in his Communication in Society class heard Jolly Mollys music and knew he had to start up his music producing company once again. Since signing the band Professor Freeman and Jolly Molly have been busy recording new songs, finalizing their debut CD, and planning gigs. So far the band will be playing in Philadelphia, Ohio, Canada, Long Island, and Michigan this summer. Before summer everything has become a little hectic with scheduling and raising money. Money is the biggest problem for the band. So far the guys have been very unsuccessful with obtaining jobs and have gone so far as to sell their own plasma. After hearing this I knew Dylan and his band are all about the music.
Its Jolly Mollys acoustic rock that brings happiness when listening to the songs. When the world can seem mundane and boring, Jolly Molly brings excitement and wonder back to life. Most of Jolly Mollys songs are about relationships and girls. The band uses their past experiences and relationships to create dramatic lyrics that make the listener contemplate their own life. Dylan has found that the songs that arent written about relationships or girls arent as popular for some reason. He also mentions that he can write about almost anything and I believe him. When I sat down with him to talk about his band he couldnt stop looking around, tapping, and drumming his fingers. At one point he picked up a table and started playing it like a drum. Music seems to exude out of him and it is no wonder to me that Jolly Molly has become a success. When asked about his hobbies Dylan simply says music. With film and comic books coming in a close second and third. Dylan seems to enjoy making people happy; during most of the interview with him we were either laughing or talking about his recent prank videos he and his friends make here on campus. When asked which bands inspired Jolly Molly to create music Phantom Planet is the first thing out of Dylans mouth. With odd and interesting lyrics and a stage presence that is unmatched, Phantom Planet is the epitome of what Jolly Molly wants to strive for. Other bands that have influenced Jolly Molly are Wheat and the Foo Fighters.
All three members are very hopeful and optimistic that with Blue Duck Records backing Jolly Molly that they will end up where they want to be. Dylan stated firmly that even if the band doesnt work out hell always play music. However, I doubt that Dylan, Greg Beck, and Joe Beck will break up. They have been a band for six years now and because all three are talented and very creative it makes writing songs easy. Though the band isnt famous yet they do have a very loyal fan base. I was able to see this on their music page on Myspace which plays some of the bands songs. The bands official website; www.jollymollyband.com, will be up and running in June. There you will be able to listen to the bands music and buy a CD. Even though everything seems to be a little up in the air, Dylan is ready for anything. Jolly Molly is so creative and unique that no matter where or what they are doing you know one thing is for sure, and that is hat great music being made.

Bio

The sound of two acoustic guitars echoed up the backstage stairwell onto the stage full of dancers rehearsing. Dylan Wise and Greg Beck sat improving songs with subjects spanning from “Beck Castle” to ketchup, while Joe created rhythms by tapping the metal guard rail. For the past five years the Beck brothers have rarely spent a moment around one another without creating art. Dylan and Greg started Jolly Molly in 2002 to contrast the hard rock groups they had been in. Clad in suits and Beatles ties they played wherever they could. In 2003 they added Joe as their drummer when asked to play at an art gallery opening. Their music has matured just as the guys have over time. Jolly Molly continues to be received as a hometown band even when hundred miles away from Toledo, Ohio. Their music is professional, their chemistry is incomparable, and their personalities can win over an audience before they even play their first song.
