Jon Aanestad

Jon Aanestad is a classically trained violinist and musician who does not fit the traditional mold. As a violinist and fiddle player he swings from Bach to Gershwin to Monroe with ease. Jon is now a member of the Boston-based jazz group, Back Bay Hot Club, a fiddle player for the popular New England band, Rockspring, and an in demand session player, recently playing fiddle for Buffalo Tom's latest sessions. He and continues to be an innovative force in the world of strings.

Jon started at the age of 4 at The Preucil School of Music, operated by William and Doris Preucil, in Iowa City, IA. At Preucil Jon studied with Stephen Sims. Sims holds a doctor of musical arts degree in performance and pedagogy from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree in performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

After graduating from Preucil in 2000, Jon attended Luther College on a music scholarship where he studied classically with Spencer Martin. At Luther, Jon began exploring other styles and started doing what jazz and rock bands have done since the early 20th century - improvising, adding a jazz riff here and a pop reference there. Jon began to play an eclectic crossover repertoire.

After Luther, Jon continued his music education at the Berklee College of Music where he played and wrote strings for the acoustic rock band Happy Dagger and branched into bluegrass and jazz fiddle.
