"Jonathan Becker - Indie Attic - Video"

December 16, 2009 - Closing our Acoustic night at the Indie Attic was Jonathan Becker. Becker takes you on a thought provoking melodic ride as he cultivates his music in true Folk tradition while candidly exploring events currently happening around us such as love, religion, globalization, gentrification and urban poverty. This very talented artists also lives what he speaks, having recently released his self titled EP in a socially responsible eco-friendly Wallet that is made from recycled materials, non toxic ink and is 100% biodegradable.

At first glance Jonathan Becker oozes charisma and warmth but once he turns over and begins to perform you can hear his colder side. His songs evoke nostalgic memories which grow into binocular images of his life.

I’d like to say he’s a friggin’ sweetheart!

Jonathan has been passionately participating in the local music community since early teenage years. He has performed in varying styles of local music. Some of his past projects (such as touring post-hardcore outfit ‘I Refuse’) have granted the opportunity as a musician to perform around the greater Ottawa area and in parts of Canada & the USA. This eclectic past has allowed him previous opportunities to perform as local support for such acts as New Idea Society, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Die Young.

Some influences and further listening recommendations range from Paul Westerberg and Eric Bachmann to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

Jonathan has played locally with artists such as Winchester Warm (members of Poorfolk) and Giant Hand. He has also supported touring acts such as Gardening Not Architecture (LA), Crazy Diamond (Toronto), Baby Eagle (Toronto, Members of Constantines, Attack in Black) and Daniel, Fred, and Julie.

“after several moves about canada and the usa as a child i settled in ottawa as my hometown. i have lived here for over a decade and am quite fond of what tends to be an overlooked city - likely because of its parliament, federal workers, and quaint neighborhoods. as a city it hosts some beautiful greenspace, history, and rich multiculturalism. most of my adolescent years were nurtured by the local punk rock communities. i have played with varying styles and peers and have been lucky enough to travel and play in different cities. there is a lot of segregation in race and class even hours down from the border that are hard for us to visualize in our own city; despite how non-progressive we may sometimes feel in a town dominated by the federal government, travelling may necessitate the need for voice to those that consider protest or equality a march of the past. the songs i play now have evolved from playing instruments alone and with peers over the past several years of my life. the words are where i have been and the things we can see.“
