Jonathan Brain

Jonathan Brain

Indie-folk singer Jonathan Brain's songs travel the open landscape of the weary soul; with a unique voice described as "extraordinary" by Wire Magazine he paints distinct visions of post-millennial life - the beauty of the everyday, relationships bungled and hearts on the mend.

An engaging live performer, Jonathan blends a striking voice, unique songwriting and inspiring guitar playing with ambient electronica to create contemporary folk music.

With influences as varied as Emmylou Harris, Iron and Wine, Daniel Lanois, the Carter family and David Gray, and extensive training in the music of the old masters, Jonathan’s songs display a breadth of scope and depth of emotion.

The Perth, Australia-based singer / songwriter / has been performing across a wide range of music stages over the last ten years. With the WAMI-award winning Schvendes and roots- rockers Closer, Jonathan has played countless gigs and released five critically-acclaimed recordings.

2006 sees Jonathan launch a solo career, with the recording of his debut solo EP Billy the Kid, a five-track / new-folk feast, where rich instrumental textures provide a backdrop for Jonathan’s unique voice and striking songwriting.

Released April 2006 the EP was described by Grok Magazine as "an excursion into sweet that puts the voice centre stage".

A striking live performer, Jonathan launched the EP in April 2006 in an intimate concert which Jason Kenny (writing for Groove Magazine) recalled as “certainly a performance those present will not forget easily with the intimacy of songs like ‘Railcar’ and ‘Beggar’ woven between standards like ‘My Funny Valentine’ and ‘Satisfied Mind’… (A) transcendental performance…”

Writing for Jayde Ferguson noted “ Red Shoes was the first song played, and was already enough to showcase his talent and incredible voice to a room packed full of his supporters.”

Jonathan is a finalist in the 2006 WAM Song of the Year competition.
