Alive! At The Elephant Room, out 7/7/10 on Fable Records

Received airplay on KOOP 90.7 FM

Austin Chronicle December 24th Edition
Volume 30, Number 17

"One of Caffeine Dreams' guests is venerated local trombonist Jon Blondell, who shines vibrantly throughout his own session, recorded live at his home base, the Elephant Room. The quintet date features UT vets Jeff Hellmer on piano and John Fremgen on bass, with youngbloods David Bowen on drums and guitarist Carter Arrington providing the pyrotechnics. The fare is mostly well-worn standards, but the playing is uniformly inspired and their refreshing take on the Doors' "Riders on the Storm" stands out.

Bio

Jon Blondell was born in Iowa, grew up in Harlingen and studied music at St. Marys University in San Antonio, Texas. While studying there he quickly became a part of the local music scene both as a trombonist and a bass player.

After St. Marys he came to Austin became the house bass player at Antones Night Club where he played with Buddy Guy, Jimmy Page, U2, Carlos Santana, Jimmy Vaughn, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Kim Wilson, Pinetop Perkins, LouAnn Barton, Marcia Ball, Charlie Sexton, and all of the Austin Blues family.

At the same time he was breaking into the jazz scene as a trombonist playing with local jazz artists as well as greats like Chet Baker, Branford Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Joe Henderson, Carl Fontana, Bill Watrous and others.

He later crossed over into the country and rock n roll world and has had the honor of working with Willie Nelson, George Strait, Delbert McClinton, Ray Price, Asleep at the Wheel and Dale Watson.

His recording discography is equally diversified and includes not only sideman credits on many jazz, blues and country records plus scores of radio and television commercials, but perhaps the best known and most influential trombone solo in rock music since the early 70s - the multi-platinum hit The Wrong Way by Sublime.

Jon has recently released his own project, The Jon Blondell Quintet, ALIVE at the ELEPHANT on Fable Records.
