Be a Better Man

Written By: Jon C. Snyder

Be a Better Man*

She was on my mind today like a thousand times before.
When I spoke to the girl you could hear it in her words.
The voice was so familiar it nearly took my breath away,
and all I could think about was what her Momma used to say;

“Someday when you grow up, you’ll be a better man.”
That’s what she said to me, way back when.
I always thought I’d have more time,
but instead she said goodbye.
Now I’ve gotta grow up and be a better man.

Pretty soon we were laughin’ about the things we used to share.
But I couldn’t tell her of all the times I wasn’t there.
Or why I took her for granted and how the guilt breaks me in two.
Wish she were here right now ‘cause I would be like someone new.

“Someday when you grow up, you’ll be a better man.”
That’s what she said to me, way back when.
I always thought I’d have more time,
but instead she said goodbye.
Now I’ve gotta grow up and be a better man.

Can’t stop thinkin’ that I should’ve been.
Right by her side, through thick and thin.
In this precious life, you reap what you sow.
Now I’m the one who’s all alone…

Well I pray to God each night and thank Him for every day
that I get to breathe the air since her Mother passed away.
You see, that girl’s my daughter and I have a master plan
to show her with my life that I can be a better man.

“Someday when you grow up, you’ll be a better man.”
That’s what she said to me, way back when.
I always thought I’d have more time,
but instead she said goodbye.
Now I’ve gotta grow up and be a better man.
Now I’m gonna grow up and be a better man…a better man.
