"Remember September"

11 Sept 2007:
Today's Remember September festival of music was an outpouring of American talent and passion. On the vast patio of Joe's bar and grill, some of Austin's finest bands lit up the stage. Among them were Subrosa Union, a fiercely talented reggae combo, and Followthrough, a roots rock acoustic act.
The band that truly caught this reporter's attention, however, is a relatively new outfit by the name of Fader_Dub. Most attention grabbing is the vocal interplay between the jazzy Meg_Foxtrot and band leader Jonny_Dub. Add the melodic guitar stylings of tunesmith Wes_D. Vegas, and the music you hear is simply out of this world.
The band opened with a reggae infused original, "Peacetime Bomber," followed by "Sweat," a straight ahead rock song. It's minimalist lyrics were of some interest:

"We are meant to sweat.
We were meant for nothing less.
We whet our taste for death.
In this day, that hasn't happened yet."

"It's somewhat of a concept song," remarks Jonny. "An observation of humanity, that everyone is here to do their life's work, whatever that may be. I wanted to lend a positive outlook to that fact, because when you view all that you have to do at once, it can be daunting, paralyzing even."

Lynn: How did Meg come into the picture?

J_Dub: "You could say I 'discovered' her." (Laughs) "I was at a party, playing my guitar and singing a Temptations song, and she came in and sang with me all night. At first she became a vocal student, until I assigned her a songwriting exercise. The lyrics she wrote became a song on the Atom 5 record, 'Into My Heart. From that point on lessons were over; she joined the band.'"

Lynn: "Meg, what can you tell us about 'Into My Heart?"

Meg: (Smiles) "It's about finding desire, but coming up against a wall. That song was my way of getting absolution. If I couldn't have that man, I would at least preserve that moment when it was possible, by capturing it in a song."

Lynn: "Your view of songwriting is quite sophisticated, for someone who hasn't been doing it very long."

Meg: "Thank you. Oh, I always had it in me. It's strange how validation from the band confirm things I've always known. I would sing in the car, constantly. I have my own style, but Jonny helped me put it where it belongs."

"Into My Heart" warmed the faces of those who witnessed Meg confidently taking lead vocal duties, and painting a powerfully evocative picture of her desire. The song concluded in a standing ovation.

Fader_Dub then launched into a version of "Time of the Season," by the Zombies, with Meg singing lead and Jonny harmonizing. Then the band left the stage while Jonny sang and played "Blue Balloons" solo.

Jonny: "I love that song. It was written by my best friend, Gustavo Monsante, who also plays it in his band, Badanks."

Between choruses Jonny spoke up, while playing the chords of the song:

"Remember September means that we all have the Freedom to Flare. It means that none of us have to live like some kind of autonomous zombie. That's why we're here. To send out our rock 'n roll to the victims of 9/11 so that they know we still fight for their name."

Fader_Dub closed out the night with an ethereal "Atom No. 5," once again creating their open ended harmonious style.

"Once in awhile,
Feels so right,
Will it tonight?"

The chorus instills a sense of wonder on the crowd, putting them on stage, in a sense. Friends were in each others arms, children were laughing. Feels so right, indeed. - Lynn Hawthorne, Mediatech Times
