"CD Review of 40 Years"

Brevard Live March 2006

Jon Parrot's CD review

This one was a real surprise because I've been waiting 25 years for Bad Boys front man and bassist Jon Parrot to step up to the plate and make a record. In fact, I've heard his excuses for so long that I really didn't think he could ever "close the deal". Well, after a quarter century not only has he finally made a record, it just happens to be one of the best records that I've ever heard from ANY artist.
So what is it about this record that's gotten me so worked up? Well, let's break it down. Is it because he's an amazing vocalist? Nope - actually, his throat has been blown out since the 80s. Is it because he's such a great musician? Mon, get real - this is Jon Parrot we're talking about. Then what is it? Why can't I stop listening to a record made by a guy that I don't even like? Well, the fact is, Jon Parrot has some of the best, hookiest, most infectious tunes that I've ever heard.
For me, a great song is all about the melody and Jon's obviously spent the last couple of decades quietly studying at the "I Want You to Want" school of pop songwriting. Songs like "Don't Ever Let Her Go" and "Don't Make no Sense at All" have become ear worms trapped in my brain and I can't get them out. Sure, the electronic drums make me wanna plunge myself throat-first onto a rusty potato scraper but when songs are this good, I can overlook a couple of production glitches.
The ten tunes on this record range from pop to rock to new country. And although there are one or two "clunkers" on this record I gotta admit that even the "clunkers" get to a pretty good hook sooner or later.
I also like to take my hat off to Dave Munkhoff for an incredible and masterful production job. It's gonna be hard, and I mean damn hard for any record to beat this one for the coveted "Record of the Year" honor on my annual Top Ten list this December. (www.jonparrot.com)

"Review of "Don't Ever Let Her Go""

Review
An absolutely brilliant piece of music. This track is so enjoyable for many reasons. First of all, the quality is fantastic. So well produced and mixed, the drums in particular. Second of all, the song is so effectively arranged that it is instantly infectious. The simple chord progression with the acoustic guitar alongside the power and crunch of the electric guitars is great. The lead vocal is tasteful accompanied by the strong, and pitch perfect, harmony vocal. The lyric is fun and endearing performed to a tee. Brilliant work!!!

Very well played acoustic 12 string and soulful vocals at the beginning of the song and then..Bang..The song start rocking hard and your in another world. The guitar solo was out of sight. Bio

15 years old I saw the Beatles live. John, Paul, George, and Ringo, they changed my life. All the girls screaming, getting out of hand. Got my first guitar and joined my first band. 40 years later, still playin the bars Never made the big time, fast girls or cars noone comes, noone cares, close to givin up Got keep the dream alive, I just can't give it up These are all songs I've been working on literally over the last 30 years. I first recorded So Inviting with Rich Ranno (Starz, Stories) on his little 4 track in 1976. We played together in a band called Bungi in Wisconsin for years, starting around 1970. Used to open for Fuse at festivals. At that time Rick Nielson(Cheap Trick) was playing a mellotron. They were incredible. We were still around when Cheap Trick got together, first with Xeno,I still have a poster with him, and then Robin Zander. Tom Peterson found me my first badass bass, a '56 Precision, from Paul Hamer's store in Chicago. We thought we had the world by the balls in those days. We opened for Bob Seger, Cactus, Vanilla Fudge, James Gang, Mountain, and so many others I can't even remember. To be continued................
