I've Got to Know

Written By: Jon Sheltmire

It seem to me we’ve grown apart
But I could never read your heart
So tell me know that I can start
To get on with my life

‘Cause every time I think we’re through
You do just what you always do;
You’re playing like this love is new
And everything’s alright

*I’ve got to know
Tell me either way
Are you gonna go
Or are you gonna stay?

I want so much to be with you
But only if you want me too
I can’t go on not knowing who
Is really on your mind

If you want to be with me
You’ve got to show me constantly
Otherwise I cannot see
Why I should go on blind

*
**I used to think I knew for sure
The love we were sharing would endure
But now I’m feeling insecure

When you whisper in my ear
The only words that I can hear
Come across as insincere
Instead of how they should

So if your kisses aren’t real
Tell me what you really feel
And we can either help it heal
Or say goodbye for good

*
***I should have kissed you – I wanted to kiss you

You Run

Written By: Jon Sheltmire

YOU RUN

I know you better now than
You know yourself
And you can think you’re fooling me and
Everyone else

But even if you’re using people
Successfully
Well, don’t make no mistake about it;
You ain’t using me

*You run from love, you run in vain from destiny
You run to hide from your responsibility
From everything you’ll have to face eventually
But you’ll always keep on running back to me

You close your eyes and cover your ears
To what must be
Pretending it’s not really there and
It’s sad to see

You think you gain your freedom living
Elusively
But you’re a slave to running and you’ll
Never be free

*

**So run, my little spoiled baby
Fast as you can
No matter where you go, you’ll end up
Where you began

Search as far as necessary
I have no fear
‘Cause I know when you find your feelings
They’ll lead you here

*
***and you can’t hide from your heart
No, you can’t hide from your heart

Whenever

Written By: Jon Sheltmire

Whenever I’m down you always make me smile
Anywhere we are you make it feel worthwhile
When I do wrong you never reprimand
Say what I like ‘cause I know you’ll understand

• So anytime you need someone
• I’ll be the one who runs to you
• And when you only feel like having fun
• I’ll be the one who won’t care what we do
• And when you want to speak your mind
• I’ll be the one who understands
• And when you find yourself in troubled times
• I’ll be the one who is holding your hand

I’ll believe anything you say
And if you say it should be, I know it couldn’t be
Any other way

When I rush in, you’re always close behind
There are times you just know what’s on my mind
When I confide, you never tell a soul
You bring me out when I lose my self control

• So when you want to play the game
• I’ll be the one who lets you win
• And when you rush into the burning flame
• I’ll be the first one to follow you in
• And if you ever fall behind
• I’ll be the one who waits for you
• And if you get yourself into a bind
• I’ll be the first one to help see you through

Call on me any time of day
And anything you request, as far as I’m concerned,
Has to be done right away

I’ll believe anything you say
And if you say it should be, I know it couldn’t be
Any other way

Red Dog Day

Written By: Jon Sheltmire

RED DOG DAY
It was a red dog day in the blue junk room
The thick sun breath, through the thick sun gloom,
Was baking the dirt on the shoes and the broom
By the window

Sugar was awake in a restless mood
The woman at the register had been so rude
And Sugar was the type just to break and brood
In the shadows

Sugar shuffled into a shifting stare
Of the woman at the register with shock-red hair
Sugar took coffee and an empty chair
By the window

Sugar took cover with a magazine
The woman at the register didn’t look as mean
The way she flew her fingers and the way she leaned
On her elbow

• Don’t nobody wonder my name or my age
My life is blowin’ by like an unread page
Don’t nobody care what they’re gonna find
I just wanna change somebody’s mind

Sugar took a turn at the counter side
Sugar took a moment to swallow pride
Sugar took a breath and a final stride
To thewindow

Once apon the register, sugar did speak;
“You could’ve been nicer than you were last week…
Here I am again, just to turn the other cheek
For the next blow…”

The woman said, “Boy, but I can’t recall
Ever even meeting you before at all ~
So, could you move aside so another can call
To my window?”
• (chorus)

Corduroy

Written By: Jon Sheltmire

CORDUROY

Halloween -orange sky dips through fine mist and rain
To taste ideas and ashes from the chimneys of our brains
I drive down the road; it all looks the same
From the place where I am going to the place whence I came

*Corduroy – oils and ointments
Footprints and fabrics in the solid baked land
Cobblestones laid in the soil of circumstance;
So ridiculously random and yet so perfectly planned

Cigarettes and broken glass sink through the sand
Beneath the metals and shiny plastics of the calculated man
I laugh at the moon, I howl at the sun
There’s an empty chair there in the room where the game has begun

*Corduroy – oils and ointments
Footprints and fabrics in the solid baked land
Angels and visitors scramble to see
Because there’s something more powerful in you and me

Black, feverish emotion popping through the veins
Until only the smoldering shell of my surface remains
She clutches her crown, I cradle her fear
But when I move around her body she just disappears

*Corduroy – oils and ointments
Footprints and fabrics in the solid baked land
I dreamed we were balancing on the crack of a sound
Together we stepped down off the edge and we returned to the ground

Someone

Written By: Jon Sheltmire

Someone

Someone touches your skin
Someone kisses your lips

• That someone was supposed to be me
• What I would do if you were with me

Someone lays by your side
Someone holds you at night

• That someone was supposed to be me
• What I would do if you were with me

** I don’t wanna know how someone found you
Or why this mistake came to be
I just want to feel my arms around you
I just want that someone to be me

Someone looks in your eyes
Someone is there in your life

• That someone was supposed to be me
• What I would do if you were with me

** I don’t wanna know how someone found you
Or why this mistake came to be
I just want to feel my arms around you
I just want that someone to be me
