"Rancho Santa Fe teen’s songs help support children at Casa de Amparo"

Rancho Santa Fe teenager Jordan Perez has found a way to turn his love of music into support for a worthy cause. Jordan penned three songs inspired by his volunteer work with children at Casa de Amparo and performed them live at a Dec. 9 charity fashion show and beauty boutique at his parents’ Fairbanks Ranch home.

From CD sales of his songs and a percentage of the boutique sales, the event raised $3,600 for the nonprofit so close to Jordan’s heart.
Jordan, a 16-year-old junior at La Jolla Country Day, was looking for a community service project for school when he found Casa de Amparo, an organization that supports abused and neglected children.
“I fell in love with the whole organization,” said Jordan, noting he was struck by how the children acted, despite having lived through some pretty traumatic circumstances.
“The kids there are the nicest, most well-behaved kids I’ve ever met,” Jordan said. “They are so happy to see volunteers and it’s such a great environment.”

He spent a full summer volunteering for the organization and regretfully had to stop when school and sports season started—Jordan swims and plays water polo. He started organizing charity events to support Casa so he could help in another way.

Through music, Jordan was able express his emotions about the children and their circumstances.
Jordan first started taking piano lessons in the sixth grade but would soon give it up for the drums. He picked up piano lessons again his sophomore year last year and “the music just took hold of me,” he said.
Although he’s still learning music theory, it hasn’t kept him from writing his own music.

His songs for Casa, “Hope,” “The Journey” and “Fantasy in A Minor,” are artistically composed and you can almost hear the happy, hopeful children’s movement in them.
“I am so proud,” said his mom Diane Lekven, who beams when Jordan plays. “As a mom, you know you listen with mom ears but my friends were impressed, as well. I’m just excited and proud that he’s capable of doing this.”
