"Josh Clemons - Hey You"

Josh Clemons is a man who knows exactly what he wants, and doesn’t hesitate to chase after it. On his latest mixtape leak, Hey You, the Los Angeles rapper spots a female who looks unhappy with her fella and goes straight into pickup mode. While I doubt that most guys could get away with addressing a shawty as “You with your ass out,” it’s hard to argue with the smooth, pop-referential game Clemons and his wingman, East Coast high-roller Freck Billionaire spit over Mizfitz SoundZ’ luxuriously soulful chopped-sample instrumental. On the back end (pun not intended), the headliner realizes the female in question has more to offer than a nice posterior: “There’s something special about this one / I don’t get bored when she talk; I actually wanna listen.” Complete with a catchy, lightly Auto-Tuned chorus, Hey You has a vibe reminiscent of a certain Degrassi graduate‘s female-oriented breakout smash – needless to say, there’s considerable hit potential here. Fans can hear more from this promising up-and-comer on his forthcoming Zero Budget: The Installment LP, set to drop on 4/20.

"MUSIC UP CLOSE WITH JANIE – JANUARY 2010"

Cozying up in this table by the stage are two California hip-hop artists, who perform under their real names and not a flashy alter. Born in Texas, Josh Clemons now lives in Inland Empire. Like a lot of musicians, his love of music began in church. But it was hip-hop that stole his heart. He began rapping at15 and since has clocked a lot of hours in front of an audience, touring all over the US. Last year, he released his first mixtape, Freedom of Speech, following it with the catchy single “White Boy Clothes,” a fun, funky tune.

"WHITE BOY CLOTHES"

Josh Clemons — neighborhood play cousin of the New Boyz and their Elmo-fitted-rocking friends — picked a genuinely glorious beat and threw some of the most inane lyrics over 808s I’ve heard this side of “Ass N Titties.” I’m not mad at J. Clem for conceptualizing mildly entertaining Caucasian garb into song and dance, but what’s lost here is the irony that most white boys actually wear what they deem to be “Black clothes.”

Whoa. Wait. Stop the presses. We might be onto a stroke of genius here…

So what you’re telling me, Joshua, is in 2009 we have a cyclical chase of white men eyeing trends of black men, and now black men following fashion of white men? How Dickensian! I applaud your attention to detail. Your foresight. Your Victorian-stylized prose on a subject rooted in the mirth and despair of a generation. Not since Captain Hook was chasing the lost boys, who were chasing after wild animals, who were chasing after Indians, who were chasing after Captain Hook, round and round about NeverNeverland have I seen such metaphor for the futility of the hunt. - smokingsection.uproxx.com
