"Rockin' around the North Country with Josh Cramoy - Placid group gaining reputation as top regional act."

By Steve Ouellette
Features Editor

Lake Placid -- Josh Cramoy isn't always sure where he'll be on the weekend.
But he always knows what he'll be doing.
Over the past couple of years, the Josh Cramoy Band has become one of the busiest and most popular bands in the North Country.
On any given weekend, the band, featuring Josh, his younger brother Jeremiah, lead guitarist Mike Bidwell and drummer Billy King, can be found on a stage somewhere in the region.
"We just love to play in front of a captive audience," chuckled the 21-year-old singer. "Music has always been central to my life. I've been doing it since - I don't know when."
The band started in 2002 when both Josh and Jeremiah were still at Northwood School in Lake Placid.
They started with a gig at the Wobbly Moose in AuSable Forks, playing mostly cover songs of musicians they grew up with - Billy Joel, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Sublime - featuring Josh's strong, smooth vocals.
Soon, more jobs followed and Josh began to mix in his original songs. They won the Plattsburgh Battle of the Bands in 2003 and also put out an original CD titled "Saving Grace".
Since expanding to a full band, the sound, said Josh, has gotten a bit edgier.
Musically, "we're somewhere in the middle. It's not soft rock, but it's not hard either. It's sort of like Matchbox 20 ... but it's hard for me to describe. Everyone should hear it for themselves."
In the past year, The Josh Cramoy Band has played all over Northern New York and Vermont and ventured as far as Chicago and Virginia Beach.
The band has begun to hit the college scene, opening recently for singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw at UMass-Lowell and "Saturday Night Live" comedian Jim Breuer at Ramapo.
They've played at Clarkson, Colgate, Paul Smith's and Williams College this spring and the schedule keeps getting busier.
"We've got stuff booked as far ahead as next April." marveled Josh.
Josh recently left his job to concentrate on music full-time though Jeremiah still takes classes at North Country Community College.
"I think a lot of people are scared to do it, but I just can't think of anything else I'd rather do. ... It sounds like a cliche, but I'm following a dream."
"Record deals and all that are nice ... success to me is being able to play music full-time and make a living at it."
"We're not quite there yet, but we're getting closer."
Josh feels fortunate to have Jeremiah playing bass, singing backup and sharing the increasingly longer rides on the road.
"He's been my best friend as long as I remember. He's devoted too, and there's no one I'd rather do this with."
The Josh Cramoy Band is quickly developing a reputation as a band with a heart, doing many charity appearances each year.
Tonight, they will play a benefit at the Olympic Center for the Myelin Project, which fights neurological diseases.
Josh and Jeremiah - who grew up in Connecticut before moving to Lake Placid in 2000 - had a grandmother who suffered from ALS before she died and had friends in school affected by multiple sclerosis.
"It's something that's very important to us." said Josh. "We love doing it, we love helping out."
On May 29, the band will also headline the Spring Jam at the Naked Turtle in Plattsburgh to benefit the AIDS Council.
Josh hopes to get tin the sutdio this summer for a new album, or at least an EP or demo of his newer stuff.
"It's just hard to find the time." - Press Republican - May, 2005
