Joshua Cheyenne

BandBluesSinger/Songwriter

I am a self-taught mandolin, banjo, lap-steel and bottleneck slide guitar player. I also write my own songs which are often folky, dreamy, melancholy and melodic with delicate instrumentation. When I play blues, I usually do the reverse and keep it quite gritty and dirty, as it should be.

Biography

I grew up listening obsessively to techno music as a child, of all things..
That included a lot of ambient and experimental electronic music also which is where I appreciated subtle melodies and the hypnotic aspects of music.

When I got older I completely changed and got into delta blues and electric blues, and also many solo songwriters etc..
For many years now i've taught myself how to play different instruments, mainly slide guitar, lapsteel and banjo and I write my own songs.
I've moved most of my life and lived in many different places, been to many schools and experienced a lot of different things, so perhaps that helps in writing songs.
Also my other interests which do have an influence on my music i'm sure, are reading books about philosophy, psychology, spirituality and religion and literature in general.
I am self-taught on the instruments I play, though I learned music theory through piano lessons in my late teens and early 20's.

Lyrics

Violet Morning Sky

Written By: Joshua Hackett

There's a girl on the beach picking up shells,
Under a violet morning sky,
But her head's in the clouds,
Remembering what she said that day.

If you take me, take me away in the rain
I won't ever look back again,
I need you so much it feels like pain,
So take me, take me away in the rain.

As she walks back home hugging her own waist,
She listens to the sea whispering her name,
Wiping the salty tears from her face,
Each one a sister to the ocean waves.

If you take me, take me away in the rain,
I won't ever look back again,
I've been loving you for so long,
So take me, take me away in the rain.

In the rain,
In the rain,
In the rain,
In the rain...

Blue Is Sweeter

Written By: Joshua Hackett

Comfortable in blue,
relaxed and unmoved,
you could try to hurt me,
but I wouldn't even care.

Looking out through raindrops,
sprawled across my window pane, they look lazy and I feel the same.

Because blue is a sweeter colour than red,
blue is a sweeter colour than red,
when you feel the weight lifting off of your head,
that's when blue is sweeter than red.

Don't try to tell me it's not okay,
I won't receive any judgement today,
I don't expect you to understand,
But if you did I bet you'd take my hand

Now that i'm invincible,
you can throw your stones at me in the street,
I'll just brush the dust from my hair

So hand me my dancing shoes,
while i'm smiling peacefully at you,
I wouldn't be surprised if I float off,
into the air

Because blue is a sweeter colour than red,
blue is a sweeter colour than red,
when you feel the weight lifting off of your head,
that's when blue is sweeter than red.
