Bio

Joshua, a young, dynamic singer/songwriter/musician is yet another of the authentic, soulful artists that have emerged from the City of Brotherly Love over the last decade. Backed by a crack group of talented musicians (The J.Hill Experience), J. is committed to showcasing his music within the context of a hard-hitting, live attack. The J.Hill Experience is a hard-rocking, in-the-pocket ensemble that is equally adept at dropping soul, funk, and rock with their jazz and blues chops on full display. J. is currently putting the finishing touches on his first record, an independently produced and released project, which is scheduled for fall 2004 release.

J.Hill was born and raised in a gritty West Philadelphia neighborhood, and his music reflects both the attitude and the diversity of the inner-city experience. His early musical experiences were at the Lamberton middle school, where he learned the trumpet and performed in musical productions like Annie Get Your Gun. He received inspiration from the music of Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Michael Jackson, and Miles Davis. J. also benefited from having a professional musician for a father. The senior Mr. Hill exposed J. to the wonders of his home studio and recording technology at an early age. As a teenager, J.’s trumpet prowess afforded him the opportunity to gig with various salsa and jazz ensembles around Philadelphia.

While attending Penn State University, J. put the trumpet aside (for now), picked up the microphone, sat down at the piano, and began to write and perform the stirring soul music he’s become known for. J. became a crowd-pleasing favorite in and around Happy Valley, playing everywhere, sometimes setting up venues himself. Returning to Philadelphia, J. has continued to perform original music whenever and wherever possible. The Five Spot, Doc Watson’s, Mill Creek Tavern and Nell’s in NYC are a few of the venues where J. and the Experience have banged out hot sets. J. also plays un-plugged sets at various intimate venues around the Philadelphia region.

After several years of performing and life experiences, the music has continued to evolve from conventional R&B. J. has come to appreciate the diversity of music as expressed by artist’s like Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz, Marvin Gaye, Beck, and Pink Floyd. Working on the new record, the Experience strived for a multi-cultural sound that incorporates rock, jazz, urban, and Latin. J.Hill describes it as “Alternative Soul”, which he believes is the sound that best reflects where he’s coming from today, and will showcase his “stories of the soul” to the widest possible audience.

J has recently opened for John Legend at the University of Delaware and will be opening for Gerald Levert and Jaguar Wright in Philadelphia on August 26, 2005
