ARTIST PROFILE
JOSHUA WALKER

Joshua Walker is a versatile guitarist and
composer currently residing in Charlottesville. His
musical journey has also taken him to live in many
other larger cities including Baltimore, Richmond,
and Montreal, Canada. A graduate of Virginia
Commonwealth University, he has additionally
pursued postgraduate studies with Gary Thomas,
Greg Osby, Paul Bollenback, Ingrid Jensen, and
Michael Formanek at The Peabody Institute of the
Johns Hopkins University. During his time at
Peabody he was awarded the Charlie Byrd
Endowment for Guitar, which is presented to one
guitar student per school year. Joshua has
performed at The Montreal International Jazz
Festival in Canada ; at The Millennium Music
Conference in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania ; and at
The Bob Marley One Love Festival, the Jazz By
the Lake Festival and The Occasion for the Arts
Festival in Virginia . Joshua has performed with
pop star Jason Mraz; on the same concert bill as
Charlie Byrd; and with Johnny Thunder of ‘The
Drifters'.
In January of
2008, Joshua
will be traveling
with a group led
by Canadian
double bassist
Karine Chap-
delaine. The tour
will take them
from the Mid-
Atlantic area,
through New
England, into
the Canadian
provinces of
Quebec and
Ontario and culminating with a showcase
performance at this year’s International Jazz
Educator’s Conference in Toronto on January
11. The IAJE conference is held annually in a
different city form year to year and is attended by
virtually every famous artist in the jazz genre as
well as thousands of other jazz musicians, fans,
and educators.
Joshua also has recently completed his first full
length recording with his working quartet of the
last several years. It was recorded at NPR studios
in Washington DC and features some fine players.
He wanted the group to perform his music for
some time before recording which has resulted in
a recording that has truly captured a ‘group vibe’
The group consists of Joshua on guitar (as well as
penning 7 of the 8 cuts on the album), Russell
Kirk on alto saxophone, Michael Hawkins on
double bass, and Shareef Taher on drums. The
album is entitled ‘Inertia ‘ and features all
original music that can be described as modern or
progressive jazz.

Joshua is also a member of The Jazz
Composer's Alliance in Richmond , Virginia , and
has been a featured composer at several of their
concerts. Joshua's compositions have been
featured three times on the jazz-guitar internet
podcast entitled ‘No Idle Frets'. Another project
that Joshua leads is the Joshua Walker Trio. This
group also maintains an active performance
schedule in the mid Atlantic area. It often features
the standard guitar trio instrumentation line up of
guitar, double bass, and drums. Lately Joshua has
been also implementing the use of a new trio that
features organ/keyboard, guitar and drum. Joshua
also frequently performs in duo with bassists and
saxophonists. He can be heard every Sunday at The Glen Restaurant in Glen Allen, Virginia , in
duo with one of the area's top bassists. Joshua also
regularly performs with the Richmond based funk-
soul-jazz group, Soul Army.

Bio

Joshua Walker's group is a unique all instrumental group. The group can be described as Progressive Jazz or Fusion. The four members have played together for about a year, logging many performance hours together and in other groups in clubs, venues, and festivals in The Untied States and Canada. They truly enjoy creating their art and this is evident upon hearing them play together.
Joshua Walker has performed at The Montreal International Jazz Festival, The International Jazz Educator's Conference and Rex in Toronto, 2008, and has opened up for Randy Brecker, and Pat and Joe LaBarbara. He has appeared on the same concert bill as Charlie Byrd and The Washington Guitar Quintet.
The group is truly an original sounding unit but is influenced by everything from the music of saxophonists like Gary Thomas and Greg Osby to guitarists Pat Metheny and John Scofield to groups such as Soulive and Medeski , Martin, and Wood.
