"JOSLYN DANIEL BRINGS GENUINE EMOTION THROUGH STORY AND SONG"

To speak candidly for a second, it goes without saying that we’re living through an interesting phase of music creation.

In an industry built on networking, connections or just getting lucky, the act of listening to music has become a risky business. There’s a mild anxiety that conjures up when you listen to a new song from an up and coming artist. For a second there’s the gritty hum of an intrusive thought that asks, “how much of this is real?” Meaning: how much of this is genuine songwriting and music production based on real human emotions?

In an age where anyone can (and will) manufacture any relatable feeling as a way for monetary gain, there’s always a heavy suspicion that what you’re listening to might not be genuine.

I was not suspicious of Joslyn Daniel and her upcoming EP “Ruminating Thoughts.”

Joslyn Daniel created a genuine and moving EP. Ruminating Thoughts is only the start of what she can accomplish.

At the intersection of love and heartbreak, the DIY Indie veteran Joslyn Daniel is staking her claim as a force to be reckoned with. Her new EP, “Ruminating thoughts,” produced by Jacob Sinay, is set to release on May 21 after months of promotion.

Daniel’s project opens with “Into The Void”, a short but sweet anthem to a lost chance of love. The song is supported by a repetitive guitar riff that reverberates sweetly across a fast-paced R&B drum production. As the introduction to a revamped artist, the song sets the tone for the rest of the EP as a catchy and relatable collection of songs.

The heaviness of “Into The Void” is then put into perspective when Daniel’s next track, “Never Again,” begins. Here Daniel is truly expressing the full range of her animosity and passion. Accompanied by a solid trap beat that is enough to get you moving out of your seat, it seems like the song is almost designed to be played on a loop. On the first listen, you’re distracted by how well Daniel’s vocals accompany the booming bass line and echoey synthesizer module. On the second, you’re able to capture the force behind her songwriting. It’s clear that there is a lot of raw emotion being displayed throughout this song and the project as a whole.

The third song off of Ruminating Thoughts, “Questioning,” is a testament to the EP’s pacing. Where “Never Again,” brought the high energy explosion, “Questioning” brings a different intensity rooted in storytelling. With elements of the song tied to Daniel’s reality, “Questioning,” sheds light into the real struggles behind the modern relationship. Miscommunication, regret and trauma are the themes that create a surreal backdrop to the song’s ethereal and spacey feeling. As the halfway point of the project, Daniel proves that she’s not afraid to get vulnerable.

That idea reigns true in the fourth track, “Venus-Mars.” A familiar favorite that appeared in Dream of Eros, a Split EP with Daniel’s former bandmate and long-time friend Ultraviolet Boy (D’Vonna Miller). Yet another display of Daniel’s soothing voice, Venus-Mars has the numbers to back itself up. With over 5,000 streams in the first month of Dream of Eros’ release, Daniel alongside Miller, have cemented the fact that their songs work in an entirely different setting than we initially thought. It’d be a tragedy if I didn’t mention the melodic and groovy energy that the song brings to life across a bed of synthesizers and a rough and steady drum beat.

After a brief interlude entitled “Space,” that sets the tone for the end of the project, “Up To You,” the last track on the EP springs into action with a melodic reverb-soaked guitar chord progression. Accompanied by another heavy-hitting trap beat, Daniel harmonizes with a brooding energy that manifests in a sorrowful plea to an unknown subject. It’s here that we recognize a quasi-character arc throughout the project. Where Ruminating Thoughts begins with heartbreak, it ends in emotional maturity and the realization that you can’t control someone.

A multi-year San Antonio DIY veteran, Ruminating Thoughts is the first of many projects from the revamped Joslyn Daniel.

Just as there’s time for growth and healing, there is time for existing in the state of your current romantic situation. Ruminating Thoughts, the first of many projects to come from Joslyn Daniel, is the raw and emotional calm before the storm.

Ruminating Thoughts will be available on all streaming services May 21, 2021. You can pre save the album here - Other You Media

"GETTING TO KNOW... JOSLYN DANIEL"

After emerging earlier this year with her highly-praised singles 'greener grasses' and 'Venus-Mars', US singer and songwriter Joslyn Daniel has now returned to share her latest effort 'Never Again'.

Channelling a raw and passionate RnB-inspired direction throughout, 'Never Again' makes for a powerful return from this young artist. Filled with powerful emotion, pulsing production, and her own captivating vocals filing the space from start to finish, it feels like she is set to become a huge talking point over the coming months.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with her to find out more about her background and what has inspired her most over the years.

-

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

I fell in love with piano because it felt like the possibilities were endless. I could play any song by ear and if I got it wrong, the right note was just a half step away.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

As a kid, I really loved pop music. Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Hilary Duff, and then as a teenager, I fell more into the pop rock scene. I was certifiably “emo” with Paramore and Panic! At The Disco stickers donning folders and doors.

What was the first album you remember owning?

The first album I owned, that was notable, was a vinyl of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, which I actually found in a $5 mystery box at the record store.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

I wish I would’ve written Je cours by Félix Dyotte but I can’t speak French at all.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

As far as rituals, I like to light some incense and essentially meditate on my feelings. Most often, I try to put myself back into a situation in my mind, to gauge the memory better and figure out exactly what parts of the experience affected me most.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I am currently binging Gregory Alan Isakov’s “This Empty Northern Hemisphere,” after hearing it at a close friend’s house for the first time this past weekend. Yeah, I’m one of those people who plays albums in order, on repeat.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Paramore, next question.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

The most rewarding part of being a musician is the chance to share an experience with someone from a completely different part of the world from me. Music is so powerful and expansive.

And what is the most frustrating part?

The most frustrating part is the fact that I HAVE to make music, no matter what, or else I will implode! It’s a mental and emotional need - to drain myself of past experiences by way of song.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

The best advice I’ve received is to just have fun and to not take myself so seriously. Be professional, but still find the joy in the art - because the challenge of self promotion and gathering listeners can be so daunting sometimes. - Mystic Sons

"Joslyn Daniel – Venus-Mars (2021)"

An insatiable hunger for love is something that many people have felt at some point in their lives. With the melodic and groovy sounds of ‘Venus-Mars’, Joslyn Daniel shoots romance in its purest form into your veins. This is tinged with a yearning for the normality of sharing an embrace with someone we love or moments of uninhibited joy.

Using a hit of dreamy synths and melodic drones, she engages any yearning you might have for love and romance. While there are a lot of soft feelings in the single, this is wrapped around a more carnal core of lust. If you are looking for a song that lingers in your mind while connecting with a yearning deep inside, you have come to the right place.

Dreamy synths open ‘Venus-Mars’ with a delightful delicacy. The opening of the single is like the breaking of dawn which is a wonderful introduction to the depth of emotion that shimmers through the track. The beats are gritty yet melodic as they form a counterpoint to the airy shimmering of the synths. There is a lulling sense to the melody that has your mind floating on the waves of sound in the most pleasant way. The delicacy of the melody is wonderful as it pulls you into the song while allowing the emotions of the track to effortlessly slink past your defences.

Daniel’s vocals are as light and airy as the synths in the melody. With a companionable delivery, she fills you with a yearning for something that could be. While there is a hint of insatiable desire, this has been tempered with a sense of reality. The vocals are an interesting blend of feelings as you desire someone while knowing that this has not happened yet ride a wave of dreamy wishes. This is a perfect encapsulation of how people feel.

Joslyn Daniel fills you with yearning while resting on a dreamy cloud of synths in ‘Venus-Mars’. The single pulls you in with delicate tones that lull you into a relaxed state. While riding this state, the emotions of the lyrics sink into your brain and linger long after the single ends. - The Other Side Review

"Joslyn Daniel celebrates the strength of vulnerability with ethereal love letter ‘Venus-Mars’."

Joslyn Daniel celebrates the strength of vulnerability with ethereal love letter ‘Venus-Mars’.

The track opens with the lightly cascading melody of piano keys, shadowed by the soft crackle of an old radio. There’s a heavenly undertone laced throughout the track which offers a playful exploration on the true meaning of love - whatever that may be. For Joslyn Daniel, it’s a yearning for normalcy, and a longing for respite from the stresses of contemporary society. It’s not long before the dream sequence is broken, and we are woken by the unapologetic brashness of drums. ‘Venus-Mars’ is as intelligent as it is catchy, blurring the distinction between fairy-tale and reality, and re-imagining the concept of romance for a 21st century audience. “I miss you,” sings Joslyn, “when we never even dated”. It’s a fresh take on the indie-pop genre which leaves a lasting impression well beyond the final, otherworldly sound. - Chalk Pit Records

"Joslyn Daniel - Never Again (Single"

After her beautiful two-part collaboration with Ultraviolet Boy, Joslyn Daniel is back to state a claim & put her foot down, “Never Again” will she let someone take her for granted and have someone treat her like she’s worth less than what they once made her believe she was; at least to them. It has to be a dreadful feeling to invest your all into somebody only for them to turn around & prove that it was all a lie. You were just a pawn on their quest for the next person to manipulate for their own personal gain. Still, of course, as always, when things aren’t going their way anymore, they begin to realize what they lost & come crawling back, but no, she must resist the urge to let them back in, perhaps out of fear of being alone.

Isolation can sometimes be a healthy thing, especially in cases like these, sometimes we get in denial about something traumatic that has just happened. Maybe she sees him with another girl who he’s treating better or at least seems to be; indeed, he’s playing the newbie the same way he was playing her, something tells me that’s only to get her riled up or somewhat jealous that he’s now happy without her. Still, she is not having it; she knows it’s going to fall apart as quickly as their little fling did, but she’s not taking him back. No matter how much it hurts her just to close that chapter of her life, it clearly meant a lot to her, so for it to all go to shit is too much.

This record is like, mixed emotions, the production has this upbeat feel to it, but there’s this melancholic somberness that’s portending over it & as she belts out her wails. It’s evident that this person has a lot to sit with, knowing that he’s broken this person down with his little scam. Now that he has nothing, he resorts to stalking her, making snide remarks to himself about how she’s moved on from him & will never again take him back, let alone settle for yet another person just like him; lessons have been learned. Still, you won’t even get a thank you for pushing her to tap into herself for once, the hell if you were the inspiration for her art, now that you’re out the way, it’s time for her to continue building herself back up, putting up walls that are going to take a whole lot more effort to knockdown. - Waves Movement

"Joslyn Daniel arrives on the music scene with confessional track Venus-Mars"

Upcoming artist Joslyn Daniel has made her musical debut with the beautifully delicate EP, Dreams of Eros. The EP, co-written with Ultraviolet Boy, consists only of 2 songs but reveals some deeply personal moments within those precious 6 minutes.

It’s not easy to recite and relive the details of an unreciprocated crush, but Daniel has boldly confronted this situation head-on with the second track, Venus-Mars.

With the opening lyric, ‘I miss you and we never even dated’, there’s no denying that “Venus-Mars” is a song of longing and yearning for an almost-lover and, admiringly, Daniel is owning everything about it.

What separates “Venus-Mars” from the hundreds of other unrequited love songs out there is that there’s no self-blame or self-pity from Daniels, and no resentment towards her love interest. Instead, Daniel only reminisces on a confusing relationship and asks for clarity, ‘don’t leave it open-ended.’

This almost matter-of-fact perspective on a one-sided crush makes the song refreshingly innocent, and is a welcomed break from the oversaturated world of shady call-out culture and diss tracks.

Daniel draws inspiration from iconic artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Dolly Parton, Paramore, and Kacey Musgraves, and “Venus-Mars” really demonstrates the parallels found between these artists. With heartfelt lyrics, emotively smooth vocals, and gentle instrumentation, the track cleverly combines elements of timeless classics, glazed over with glossy modern-day production.

Musically, the EP places the listener in a dream-like state; hypnotised by the airy textures, ethereal synths and calming melodies, but grounded and engaged with a steady lofi-beat. This soundscape perfectly compliments the reflective nature of the track and acts as a beautiful backdrop for the sentimental scene Daniel describes.

This electro-pop serenity is reminiscent of artists such as The Japanese House and Phoebe Bridgers. It’s a great indication of just how far Joslyn Daniel could develop as an artist, considering the high standard she’s set herself with this impressive first release. - Music Is To Blame
