Live Band Reviews

I love what I do more than I should, I suppose. What else allows me to see the hottest bands, hang out with them, and ruin my hearing and my liver?

Jovial Flow@Tony‚s Bar 7/22/06

Quite frankly, I was surprised at myself for looking forward to the Jovial Flow show at Tony's Bar last Saturday. I, personally, have never been a part of the jam-band scene, but I had a feeling that Jovial Flow was going to be something special.
This Clintonville, Ohio (Columbus burb) 5-piece is the brainchild of rhythm guitarist/lead vocalist/songwriter John Etzel, who is the creative force within the band.
A largely original band, Jovial Flow started off a little late (presumably to allow a crowd to filter in) but made up for the wait right out of the gate with "Across the Line" and served up tasty dishes such as jam versions of The Rolling Stones‚ "Gimme Shelter", Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground", Katrina and the Waves‚ "Walkin on Sunshine" as well as other original works like "Waiting", and what I consider to be my personal favorite, "Hiding All the Way". Jovial Flow's rhythm section has a unique distinction in that the drummer, Matt Bailey, and the bassist, Andy Bailey, are twin brothers.
I was somewhat confused as to why Andy was sitting at the start of Jovial Flow's set until Etzel informed the crowd that Andy had just undergone an emergency appendectomy a couple days prior. This earned my respect for the guitarist-turned-bassist, and for the band as well. It would have been easy for them to postpone or cancel the show to give Bailey more time to recuperate, but the band showed moxy - more than I can say for a lot of major, signed acts.
Would I go see Jovial Flow again? You bet your hemp-bracelet I would. - Wicked Publications

Bio

In these trying times where we live under the cloak of fear and the uncertainty of tomorrow, Clintonville, Ohio’s Jovial Flow brings positive, high-energy rock that helps you forget your problems, elevate your senses and move your body. With catchy, relevant songwriting from full-out rockers to poignant ballads, Jovial Flow delivers a soulful sound and attitude all their own. John Etzel's
powerful, passionate vocals meld with Scott Brubach’s soaring guitar, as Jonathan Barth’s classically-influenced keys cascade over a limber but rock-solid rhythm underbelly courtesy of twin brothers Andy and Matt Bailey. Formed in 2004, the band has developed immensely in a short period of time and is poised to make waves with the help of their forthcoming debut album.

Jovial Flow has shared the stage with several national and regional acts, including Blues Traveler, Yonder Mountain String Band, Tea Leaf Green, and Ekoostik Hookah, to name a few. They have been invited to play a myriad of venues all over Ohio, from Nelson Ledges Quarry Park, Frontier Ranch and The Sandusky Bay Pavilion to Little Brother’s, Ruby Tuesday, Whiskey Dick’s and The Blue Gator. They are veterans of the long-running bi-annual Hookahville festival, Harvest Jam, and several other festivals at Legend Valley (formerly Buckeye Lake Music Center). Jovial Flow is ready to play wherever the sound will take them.
