"The INDI Magazine"

Maybe it was divine intervention. The simple cause and effect of a small lizard attempting to escape the menacing claws of a predatory house cat by running into the office between two stacks of yet to be reviewed music causing both stacks of CDs to be strewn across the floor. Picking up the pile and deciding to stick the Joye B. Moore into the CD player because the cover art was different, was just a coincidence.
Yeah, it was different.
The first few seconds into the record and it was immediately obvious that a new genre of music was on the scene. What would normally be traditional gospel lyrics, were turned upside down by the moving beautiful smooth vocal style, and supported by amazingly engaging jazz music underpinnings.
It was so refreshing. Yet it wasn’t at all pretentious or preachy. If anything, the music and the lyrics all seemed to flow from a single source - the heart. There is also the message from within the lyrics that certainly seems to be the stuff of Joye’s personal experiences, held up in the light of hope and buoyed by encouragement for the soul.
There are several songs on this inspirational CD that’s worth mentioning. “He’s All I Need,” is soaring remake of the Ashford & Simpson written song. “Canvas of Life” with its gentle conga and bass, is an appreciation of the all-knowing. “Choose Ye This Day,” Sending You A Blessing,” and the title tract “Project Butterfly,” all serve as important messages to humankind that we are masterpieces of God.
Each and every song is a testament to one outstanding artist that will bring much Joye.

"JOYE B. MOORE: A Pristine And Much Needed Inspirational Sound"

When the ‘new wave’ approach to gospel/inspirational music began to permeate the gospel market, my reaction was two-fold: I found myself querying the seemingly ‘glitzy’ showbiz display of those who sang. Were the gospel singers praising a Higher order or vying for an opportunity to show their talent? Were their objectives to spread the “Word” or eventually become a recording artist or film star? Was the recording objective to appeal o the youth market designed to interpret the bible, or give birth to an overnight recording sensation? It is somewhat difficult to think of a spiritual being w hen the singer has been properly coiffured, manicure and outfitted in designer/tailor-made clothing. Not-withstanding is their agent of the r&b influence to buffer the youth market!
Had Joye B. Moore been born during the 30’s or 40’s, she would (indeed) be Sarah Vaughn, Carmen McRae, Bessie Smith or Ella Fitzgerald today. It is by no mistake that she is comparable to these first ladies of jazz, for her recent CD “Project Butterfly Phase II: The Cocoon,” (on Mo Flow Records Label/Moore Music Ministries/Lightyear Entertainment), is one of the cornerstones supporting the pantheon of jazz/inspirational music. {From beginning to end, this is an outstanding recording that will have a very long life in one’s CD library.}
One would not have to think twice before assenting to the fact that Ms. Moore’s urban inspirational music will make the staunchest agnostic ‘rethink’ his/her life/faith issues. And vocally, she runs the gamut of reminding us of Eryka Badu, Patti Austin and (Ms.) Randy Crawford.
Throughout the fourteen tracks: ‘Break The Yoke,’ ‘One Day,’ ‘Thank You,’ ‘Hold Up The Light,’ ‘The Wind,’ ‘Everything Must Change,’ ‘Project Butterfly,’ ‘Canvas of Life,’ ‘Choose Ye This Day,’ ‘A Little Inspiration,’ ‘Make Your Move,’ ‘Sending You A Blessings,’ ‘Before Him,’ and ‘Christ is Moving,’ eleven were penned by Ms. Moore; attesting to her ability to see and feel the world the way an artist does on a canvas. Unlike Mary, Mary or Kirk Franklin, Ms. Moore’s sty is… Griot-like, quite and reflective. Her work is invitational to the way of spiritual belief. Gladly it is devoid the ‘fire and brimstones,’ direction which does nothing but repel the truly seeking heart and mind. There is not one song among this assemblage, which could not find itself among the repertoire of gospel singers: Ms. Shirley Caesar of Deniece Williams.
Indeed Ms. Moore’s world of inspirational music contains the components, which are respected and pertinent for setting the pace for an unchallenged leadership! It is about time! Yes, there is a Grammy nomination in this recording! More importantly however, as long as Ms. Moore continues to pen and produce qualitative music, she will continue to cause the industry to stand back and pay…. ATTENTION!
{On a scale of 1 to 10 this CD is rated at 10+}
