BandAmericana

White's commanding alto can soar with passion, growl with indignation and burn with desire. She has that knack for loading each line with nuance and personality; there's something about her delivery that charges each line with meaning so that a lyric grabs your heart or knocks your head off.

Biography

Born in Turrell, Arkansas, raised in Indiana, White moved to Nashville, TN in 1982 and soon became an in-demand demo singer for publishing companies and hit songwriters. Signed to Columbia/Sony Records she released two critically acclaimed records: “Between Midnight & Hindsight”, 1992 and “Wild Love”, 1994; plus four award winning videos.

In 2006 “One More Time” went to #3 on the Americana chart and was co-produced by White and Kyle Lehning.

Since 1989 White has been a staff songwriter for various publishing companies in Nashville.

She has sung harmony on albums with Dwight Yoakam, Randy Travis, Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miller, Iris DeMent and many others.

In 2006 she won first place in the International Songwriting Competition with, “Girls with Apartments in Nashville”.

She has received raving reviews in publications such as No Depression, Rolling Stone, USA Today, Stereo Review, Mojo, Chicago Sun Times, Billboard, R&R, Us Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Pulse Magazine, etc...

White has also played the leading role of Mother Maybelle Carter in the Barter Theatre’s production of “Keep on the Sunny Side”, singing, acting, and playing guitar.

Since 1991 White continues to tour nationally and internationally and has become known as the “singer’s singer”. Quoting Buddy Miller, “Joy Lynn White tears me up. Her voice and songs are powerful and fragile in the same moment, and as real as it gets”.

Lyrics

Girls with Apartments in Nashville

Written By: Joy Lynn White/Duane Jarvis

Girls with apartments in Nashville
They come from Texas, California,
Louisiana, Indiana,
With dreams
They have thier dreams

Girls with apartments in Nashville
They drive beat up old cars
Ride around with their guitar
In the back seat
They have thier dreams
They have thier dreams

bridge #1
The night wind blows
And it chills the face of the southern rose
In Nashville

Girls with apartments in Nashville
Cuttin' corners, countin' quarters,
Cuttin' coupons
To keep the roof on
'Cause they believe in thier dreams

Girls with apartments in Nashville
Brother make no mistake
They want a piece of the cake
They'll even take half a break
'Cause they believe in thier dreams
They have thier dreams

bridge #2
The night wind blows
And they're so far away
From the people that they know
'Cause thier dream's in Nashville

Girls with apartments in Nashville

Keep This Love

Written By: Joy Lynn White/Doug Millett

Oh the leaves are turning colors
You're a leaf that's turning too
We go in opposite directions
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
For the lack of true affection

Chorus
I'd like to let you go
But my heart can't say good-bye
Sometimes I just don't know
Why we keep this love alive
Why do we keep this love alive
When we barely even try
We keep this love

Oh we used to be together
Now we're ever so far apart
Was it all just a dream?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
'Cause baby now that's how it seems

Seasons of love keep changin'
Guess we've changed too, oh yeah

Chorus

Love Sometimes

Written By: Joy Lynn White/Duane Jarvis

Love sometimes is like a diamond
Sometimes it's like coal
Love sometimes is just like smoke
Sometimes it's like gold

chorus #1
I don't always know what love is
But I Know this love is fine
We oughta get a little (a little bit closer
I don't always know what love is
This tastes just like wine
Don't let our love die on the vine

Love sometimes is like a mattress
Or a bed of nails
Love sometimes is like freedom
Sometimes it's like jail

chorus #1

A real man wants a woman
A woman wants a real man
One that understands
Yeah to understand

chorus #2
Love somtimes I know this love is fine
WE oughta get a little (we oughta get closer)
I don't always know what love is
This tastes just like wine
Don't let our love die on the vine
Love sometimes
