A cerebral emcee fronting a band composed of drums, bass guitar, electric piano and an acoustic guitarist with a mellifluous voice; not one but two cunning linguists dropping knowledge; another local R & B diva creates an amalgam of creativity whereby their set is much like a full show self-contained.
JPharaoh and The Manhattan Project were the penultimate act this past Saturday at The Norva in Norfolk's "Locals Lounge" and they proved once again that the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. If you want substantive elements of different genre, then you get it with JPharaoh (Justin Hernandez) and his band. They opened their set with spoken word acrobats and local stars Marco Mercado and Crystal Leigh, continued with the thoughtful provocations of JPharaoh amidst the well-timed angelic vocals of guitarist Czarina Parrilla Garcia and then brought on a guest in the name of Marie Hill (who I have profiled previously). And the band played on magnificently providing the added ingredients to make every vocalist just a little better.
They say that good sportscasters let the ambiance speak for itself and in that vein, it is also appropriate for good writers to not over-analyze for mere mortal words could not describe the greatness of the performance.

Bio
Some VB kids that grew up listening to all kinds of music, never really fit into any scene so they made their own. Call them daydreamers, outcasts, nerds . . they're cool with it. The more you try to label them, the more they surprise you with their versatility. J.Pharaoh and the Manhattan Project have that ability to masterfully illustrate cautionary tales lyrically but also don't take themselves too seriously with party anthems and feel good tracks that force you to move. Just bob your head and mind your business :)
