A Brief Demonstration (EP) - 2012

J Pope & Funk Friday [JPFF] have been spreading their spiraling riffs, dirty grooves and poignant messages across the Baltimore indie scene since 2010. Their well mixed smash up of hip hop, funk, and soul music have carried them from the basement parties, to venues all over Baltimore city such as The 8x10, Rams Head Live, Terra Café, Now Child Soundstage, The Wind Up Space; to college campuses in Connecticut, Virginia, and Colorado, to venues such as Rams Head Lives, The 8x10, the National Mall and beyond. They've shared the stage with national acts such as Kindred the Family Soul, Lubriphonic, Asheru, Marc Evans, Love the Poet; and local acts such as Brown F.I.S.H., Axiom, The 5th L, Soul Cannon and national figures such as actor Matt Damon.
JPFF is led by singer / emcee J Pope who has been described by Baltimore Magazine as an artist that, “doesn’t shy away from political, social, and religious issues, and frames them with a positive vibe that makes [her work] incredibly appealing.".
The amoeba-band that is Funk Friday consists of guitarist Jake Kohlhas, bassist Ron Saxton, keyboardist Rob Fontana, percussionist Gabe Pickus, and drummer Dan Samuels. Andy DeVilbiss of the Music Marauders wrote that Funk Friday "present an interesting mix of straight funk, complex fusion-y riffs, slow-jam R&B, and an ample dose of hip-hop." I just call what they do “dirty and stinky”.
JPFF formed after front woman J Pope joined with the band at an open mic on their home campus of Goucher College in Baltimore MD at the band’s weekly open mic to promote her second solo project, "The Reconstruction”. The two projects joined forces shortly thereafter to create J Pope and Funk Friday.
JPFF released “A Brief Demonstration” in late 2012 in hopes that it will satisfy fans until the band finishes its first studio release (projected release – this winter).
