JR has been making music for as long as she can recall. Early influences have included the vocal phrasings of Billie Holiday and Joni Mitchell, the spiritual wonderings of Bob Marley and the blues-rock edge of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. A shy girl growing up, she spent many hours alone, sometimes skipping school, to teach herself guitar, piano, bass and music notation to write her own music. Although she’d written music for years before, it wasn’t until studying at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT that she finally performed in front of others.

“I got invited to join this group [The Women’s Singer/Songwriter’s Collective] and the deal was we all first kind of talked and got acquainted,” she remembers. “Then we made a circle sitting on the floor and went around with everyone taking their turn to sing a song. And I was too shy. I was so shy. I closed my eyes and sang my song with my back to everyone!”

Shy and all, JR went on to study music with the guidance of jazz artist Anthony Braxton and in 1991 received a B.A. in music composition from Wesleyan, writing for choral groups, string quartets and jazz ensembles. Consistently a prolific songstress, in 1996, she founded JRRC (JR Recording Company) to release her debut, the vision of the fool, a full-length, solo recording, of 9 original songs with her on guitar and vocals. The following year came the 7-song EP follow-up entitled the vision of the fool ii produced by Brad Houser and engineered by Mell Dettmer, with performances by guitarist Leif Totusek, percussionist Mike Dillon and drummer Matt Chamberlain. In 1998, JR was chosen to perform at Lilith Fair, the international festival celebrating women in music founded by Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan. 1999 welcomed the release of a 3rd recording, Songs of Angels, produced once again by Brad Houser and engineered by Mell Dettmer with a violin performance by Eyvind Kang. This same year four singles - 2 singles each from Songs of Angels and the vision of the fool ii - climbed the MP3.com charts to hold the #1, #2, #3 and #6 positions simultaneously.

Afriqueen Stare is the 4th recorded release by JR. Produced by Mell Dettmer and JR with performances by a family of musician friends including featured performances by singer/songwriter Aiko Shimada, cellist Brent Arnold, violin/viola player Eyvind Kang, slide guitarist Joel Tepp, drummers Mike Stone and Matt Chamberlain and master balafon player Naby Camara and more…

Woman Of My Dreams

Written By: JR

Real time's hardly all time
but one place visited.
Why is it that I'm living
if not for the world of dreams?

And nightmares haunt me less now
since she came to me.
Who is she, is she me?
Who is she, is she me?

I wanna be
the Woman Of My Dreams.

I've heard of her before
but you know I've never seen her.
So's without so's as within
we see what we believe in.

And I wanna be
the Woman Of My Dreams.

Depend On You

Written By: JR

When city living isn't living somehow and it's got you would up tight.
I'll be around to walk you down, to talk you down, do anything you want me to.
I'll put my loving arms around you like you've done when I've been where you are.

'Cause I've come to Depend On You.

When money runs from pocket like you've got the plague 'til you're too sick and tired to give a damn.
Don't runaway, just run my way, you don't have to be afraid.
Just know my door is always open
and I'll put my loving arms around you like you've done when I've been where you are.

In these streets paved in confusion, you get lost trying to make sense.
When the only news is bad news and it's doing you in...

Oh yeah,
I've come to Depend On You.

When the whole world thinks you're crazy, or it just feels that way, and it keeps getting harder to be yourself.
No, don't give up just phone me up.
You don't have to ask me once.
Baby, I'm right there beside you to put my lovin' arms around you like you've done when I've been where you are.

In these streets paved in confusion, you get lost trying to make sense.
When the only news is bad news and it's doing you in...

Oh yeah,
I've come to Depend On You.

Home

Written By: JR

I'm not afraid of the dark,
not like most the other kids.
Don't feel at home at play in the city.
Not sure where home is.

And I can't seem to find my way home.
Can't seem to find my way.
How do you find the way to where you've never been with no directions?

Can't be too far from here.
Can't be too far.

Well, I've made this mistake before,
of hitchin' rides from strangers whose destinations weren't mine and now I"m lost I fear.

And I can't seem to find my way home.
Can't seem to find my way.
How do you find the way to where you've never been with no directions?

Can't be too far from here.
Can't be too far.

I've searched a long time, darlin', and I'm searching still.
With faith I'll find the day where home is where I will be.

Can't be too far from here.
Can't be too far.

Lovesong

Written By: JR

He seeks temporary shelter
When goes his storm so will he leave my arms
I want him when I don't want to
I love him when I don't love to

Love comes my way
but love won't stay
love won't stay
love won't stay

Swears he'll stay but I know he'll go his way
No love lives in my haunted heart
I want him, I want him not
I love him, I love him not

Love comes my way
but love won't stay
love won't stay
lovw won't stay

Only passing time can make me change my way, see my future in a different way
Time moves much too fast to hold to the past
Love as we're here today or love won't stay

I will look for my tomorow with yesterday and today
To face my ghosts from lovers past
To free my soul from singing love won't last

Love come my way
Love come and stay
Love, come stay
Come and stay

Aeroplanes

Written By: JR

Faith surely guides my way as I pack my bags, as I board that plane
Time lost now regained as now is my time as now the sky's my place

Oh Aeroplanes get me high so I wanna go I wanna go I wanna touch the sky
Touch the sky

Fear is grounding when I don't believe so I spread my wings with my heart-held dreams
And gaze upon my new world. Heights I once feared this day I dare

Oh Aeroplanes get me high so I wanna go I wanna go I wanna touch the sky
Touch the sky

I'll take my chances

Mama as I look around people put me down because I make my way they make me out as crazy

Oh, Mama, I make my own way. I take my chances

Faith surely guides my way as I pack my bags, as I board that plane

Landslide

Written By: Stevie Nicks

I took my love, took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills when the landslide brought me down

Oh, Mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Well, I've been afraid of changes 'cause I built my life around you
But time makes you older and even children get bolder
And I'm gettin' bolder too

Now take my love, take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, let the landslide bring me down
