"The Five Best Shows In Dallas This Weekend"

Playdough, J. Rhodes
Friday, October 26, at The Prophet Bar, $10/$12
Last week, we put the spotlight on Playdough and J. Rhodes, two Dallas emcees with new albums out. Playdough's Writer Dye: Deux or Die is a sample-heavy celebration of popular music and rap's interpretative nature, whereas J. Rhodes' Oak Cliff Huxtable reps the local scene a bit. Opener Ty City dropped his excellent new mixtape, Good Look on the Listen, this summer, and Dustin Cavazos is prepping his new one, In and Out of Sleep, for release later this fall. Add in VA the Gray, D. Hayes, DJ Niro and DJ M Knight, and you've got one fine seasonal display. -- Audra Schroeder - Dallas Observer

"J.Rhodes on MTV Rap Fix with David Banner, 9th Wonder and Sway!"

Dallas MC-producer J. Rhodes is the latest up-and-comer to "Get In The Game" on "RapFix Live" and the bespectacled artist is making the most of his largest break yet.

When asked on his reaction to having his "Hello" video featured during the show — with former Little Brother producer 9th Wonder and fiery MC David Banner weighing in alongside host Sway — the excited rapper eloquently shared his joy in being selected.

"I mean it was crazy, it was actually surreal to me, man," J. Rhodes said. "I was joking about being on there but I uploaded my video and I got the call that I’ll be on 4:00 PM eastern and it was on."

J.Rhodes didn’t stop there. He continued to express more appreciation for the opportunity and constructive criticism from 9th and Banner.

"It’s been getting great feedback from two artists I really respect and to be on a national stage and have all these people commenting on it has been nothing but a blessing," the humbled wordsmith shared. "I took it all in stride but I really can’t say enough how much it really means."

J.Rhodes’ career began in 2004, where a young Rhodes was primarily an MC but taught himself to produce out of necessity. The rapper-turned-producer then added another feather in his cap as he taught himself how to engineer his own tracks, becoming a literal triple threat. Wining the IStandard ASCAP Producer battle this year also helped to raise his profile.

"I did it this way because after a while you get sick and tired of looking for someone," the hardworking talent said. "I began reaching out to other artists and began my own label."

And reach out he has. As a producer, Rhodes has worked with artists such as Slim Thug, Mr. Head Crack of the Rickey Smiley morning show and vocalist Phill Wade. He’s also worked with So So Def recording artist Dondria and female MC Ni-Taylor.

J.Rhodes' 80’s Baby ENT label is in its fledgling stages but the Texas native says to expect more.

"I’m on my Kanye of the south thing now but I’m ready to produce for the Young Jeezy's and Common's of the world," Rhodes said. "I’m ready to take it to the masses on a bigger level." - MTV Rap Fix

"Album Review: With J. Rhodes, Has Dallas Hip Hop Finally Found Its Voice?"

It seems like every time I speak a request into the thin air somebody in this city is way ahead of me. This time that somebody is J. Rhodes. His newest album, Oak Cliff Huxtable, is a direct answer to my plea for authentic, believable hip hop that is born in and about Dallas.

J. Rhodes has spent the bulk of the past eight years garnering more credentials as a producer than an artist, though he has always aimed to be the latter. Rhodes is a member of Waco-based Symbolyc One’s production team, which has its tendrils around national acts such as Talib Kweli and Kanye West, as well as Dallaship hop matriarch Erykah Badu. Since attending the University of North Texas, J. Rhodes has honed his production skills, whether working out of his East Dallashome or his downtown studio. Yet his passion to communicate his own narratives has never waned, and that desire finds traction in Oak Cliff Huxtable. SaysRhodes, “If you listen to those 14 tracks, you can come away knowing who I am as a person.” ....(cont) - D Magazine

"Dallas Rapper J. Rhodes On How Oak Cliff Huxtable Is His College Dropout"

Name a few hip-hop artists who've had a lasting effect on you.
OutKast, first and foremost. They made being innovative cool. Every album classic, every album different. Kanye West: He brought the producer/artist to the forefront in the modern era. There were others before him, but no one did it as big as he did from a musical and branding standpoint. Jay-Z: Dude's just cool. Dude could get a plug in his head by his barber and it would become the new trend.
What does this particular album release signify for you?
It's my coming-out party as an artist. I think it's my College Dropout. I've made my name with my productions, but I think this beat brings all of my talents together to display me as an all-around artist.

What are a couple of your favorite tracks off the album?
Cliche alert: I love them ALL. All 14 tracks. No skips on this project. But ... "Loyalty": I've been through and learned a lot since my last release, and "Loyalty" discusses having an epiphany about the right and wrong people in my life. "Oak Cliff Huxtable": It just really felt like I was on the brownstone steps. Though Oak Cliff has nothing of that sort. It felt like home. My daughter being on it solidified this being my favorite!

What do you think of your co-headliner, Playdough?
Playdough has some of the most dynamic music I've heard. I've been blessed to work with him as a producer on a couple of occasions, and it was a complete honor. Coolest guy you'll ever meet. Grounded in the Lord, but he's not the type to flaunt his faith in your face. - Dallas Observer

"J.Rhodes - 5th Element"

In cult science fiction classic The Fifth Element, a taxi driver played by Bruce Willis becomes an unlikely hero when a mysterious, gibberish-speaking woman tumbles into his flying taxicab, drawing him into an elaborate struggle for the fate of the planet Earth. Hell of a way to start a relationship. Fresh off producing Talib Kweli‘s Congregation, J. Rhodes fantasizes about finding himself in a similar situation, praying for the girl of his dreams to fall out of the sky and bewitch him with her out-of-this-world charms. Sir Tim assists on the production tip, teaming up with the headliner to create an appropriately spacey synth backdrop for his lovestruck bars, and Ben Cina serenades the woman in question on his heartfelt hook. Fans will be able to find this record and much more on Rhodes’ Oak Cliff Huxtable tape, set to hit the ‘net October 8. - DJ Booth

"J.Rhodes: 5th Element (feat. Ben Cina) [prod by J.Rhodes & Sir Tim]"

J.Rhodes is celebrating the launch of his new website today and in doing so the emcee/producer is giving you a new joint for free. For “5th Element” J.Rhodes honors all the women of virtue out there with co-production by Sir Tim and featuring the R&B stylings of Ben Cina.

J.Rhodes is responsible of co-producing, with S1, Talib Kweli‘s Cerified fresH joint “Congregation” featuring Ab-Soul and Black Thought and is preparing to drop his sure to-be-dope solo project, Oak Cliff Huxtable, on October 22nd. You will be able to find “5th Element” and many more ill cuts in the near future on J.Rhodes new site VintageRhodes.com. Don’t get caught slippin’! - Kevin Nottingham

Though the video debuted on YouTube back in December, I just recently caught wind of it and had to share. Really diggin the use of the Shai sample and looking forward to hear what more will be coming from J.Rhodes. - Kevin Nottingham

"Talib Kweli Attack The Block Mix-Tape"

Congregation ft Black Thought and Ab-Soul produced by J.Rhodes - 2dopeboyz

"Talib Kweli - Congregation"

“Can I get a ‘Church!’ from the Congregation?” Fresh off unleashing his latest street album upon the ‘net, Talib Kweli has donned his Sunday best to bring us a standout selection off the project. And, like a true evangelist, he’s brought a couple homies along for the ride; over J. Rhodes’ resonant piano beat, peppered with gospel vocal interjections, the Brooklyn veteran is joined by Roots frontman Black Thought, who spits obliquely about his struggles to make it on the front, and TDE rhymesayer Ab-Soul, who proclaims himself “rap Jehova” on his fiery middle contribution. Kweli gets Biblical on his opponents on verse three, managing to rhyme “dialectic,” “Dianetics” and “diabetics,” without breaking a sweat. Does this lyrically on-point collab have you praising the Lord? More fresh tunes await on the DJ Z-Trip-hosted Attack the Block tape, available now for free streaming and download via The DJBooth. - DJ Booth

Today on MTV’s RapFix’s “Get In The Game” segment, Dallas rapper J Rodes had his video “Hello” featured and discussed by hip-hop staples 9th Wonder & David Banner. During the interview, 9th Wonder expressed that he was impressed with the beat, which was also produced by J Rhodes. He suggested that Rhodes get a team of people behind him to keep the momentum going. David Banner said, “the thing that caught me first was your voice,” and referred to Rhodes as a “triple threat”. Stay tuned folks, I’m sure he will be releasing this classic song very soon! - You people...

J. Rhodes has been working intensely in the studio to provide his fans with his best album yet. To prepare everyone for greatness, J. Rhodes is first dropping Gloria’s Sun .5 Sick Tape on January 29, 2010 which just so happens to be the day Gloria’s son was born. "J. Rhodes - Hello (video)"

The homie J.Rhodes just released the video for his single, "Hello" I gotta say that the treatment on this video is ill (that's the undergrad in film degree coming out). The production and flow are ill too.

I met J.Rhodes back in 2008 when I had just separated from the U.S. Army. He engineered studio sessions for my cousin and I at The 808 Studio. Dude is mad humble and cool. He has been on the grind with this music thing for a minute. Whether racking up iStandard Producer awards, dropping ill verses, or producing, mixing, and mastering tracks; the kid J.Rhodes is definitely putting on for The D and one to watch out for. Bless! - Calidad Entertainment

I know i've said it before that I hate making comparisons but in this case its a comparsion that i can relate to J. Rhodes is a cool dude, on his grind, networking and prolific. When I hear his voice he reminds me of Texas underground rap legend Bavu Blakes they have that articulate southern drawl with baritone flow. This video is clean and sharp and I promise you once you hear the song u will be singing it in your head all day its really catchy and familiar im not gone tell you what it is u got to watch the video and find out for yourselves. "Talented Beats...Meet Mr. Rhodes."

If you aren't familiar with the Dallas music scene, or, if your stuck in the land of party music and screw, I'd like you to take a moment, clear your ears, and listen to a star in the making. J. Rhodes, born, Justin Rhodes, is a Dallas bred producer, writer, rapper, engineer and creator of 80's Baby Ent. Rhodes sets himself apart from the mainstream Dallas movement by not only creating for himself but, maximizing his production and vocal talents and implementing them with his artists. An example of this can be seen in his latest mixtape release, The Talented Mr. Rhodes. Collaborations with 80's Baby phenoms Ni Taylor ("King and Queen") and Braysonic ("Don't Stop") only provide more proof that this growing company is producing hits like no other in the Metroplex. - SBNP Blog spot
