Hailing from Toronto’s Junction district, JR Mint aka Minty Burns is quickly burgeoning into a position as one of the cities freshest faces. A mishmash of low-income housing and cultural hotspots, The Junction’s patchwork provided a teenage JR Mint the perfect soil to plant his seeds. Skipping high school classes to skateboard, make music, and shoot paintballs at elderly women, JR somehow managed to attain a diploma in drama from Toronto’s renowned Etobicoke School of the Arts without getting expelled.
Effortlessly winning street battles throughout Toronto for years prompted Mint to enter Cravefest’s Mic 4 Your Life (hosted by Mad Linx and Bishop) contest in 2007, where he went on to defeat Toronto’s most renowned battle rappers for a number one finish and, as a result, appearance in the Toronto Star.
Pursuing his post-secondary education in Toronto’s most esteemed hip-hop venues (Opera House, Reverb, El Mocambo) JR Mint has been budding locally since early 2007. His recent opening of the recording studio Belvia Sound in Toronto’s west-end has solidified his presence in the cities scene.
Boasting a recent soundtrack appearance in Gorrilaz in Our Midst—an independent film about growing marijuana co-signed by Marc Emery—and a sponsorship from Ruth’s Hemp Foods, Minty Burns is now poised to grow globally.
A leader of the new school with old school roots, JR Mint is for fans of Lupe Fiasco, The Cool Kids, Wale, Black Milk, Devin the Dude, Redman, and AZ.
