Bio

Never satisfied within one field, Jhonny spends his time jumping between work as an illustrator, painter, song-writer, music producer, photomontage artist, 2D / 3D animator, D.J., guitarist/bass player, programmer, video producer, keyboardist/synth player, photographer, vocalist, graphic designer, sculptor, etc.

He has been the main driving force behind many musical projects including long-running and unique duo (with his brother) Hobo Obituaries, Smitten Kitten (a cross-continental collaboration with Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla the Girl), a trip-hop trio Ultra Ego (with Brodie and Glen of Brisbane band Felinedown) and a bunch of others. Among these, his recordings have featured many great guests including U.S. metaphysical hip hop lyricist ATMA, Amandah from Operator Please, and a plethora of local legends including members of The Julian Date, Elke/Dolphins, Bowser, Mourning Tide,
The Rational Academy, Spdfgh and many more. Also collaborating extensively (both musically and artistically) with Californian rock band SHMOE and alt-folk musician Reichelt. Jhonny has also been widely acclaimed for producing genre-annihilating mash-up mixes.

He has a new project, JHONNY RUSSELL and the MYSTERY SCHOOL. A one-man show which can be best described as a hybrid of electro-beats and alternative rock. The Mystery School has also started up it's own "alter-ego acts" like the electro-propaganda of Jhonny Russell and the Friends of the Library and cover band Bob Gnarly and the Supernatural Mystics.

Originally starting out as an attempt to follow the repeated advice from people to “Get a drummer and put together a real band”, it didn’t take long for him to realise that he had worked hard for over 10 years pioneering the D-I-Y-home-recording-electro-indie-rock-thing and carved out his own style. The idea of normal band line-ups and human drummers just didn’t interest Jhonny, so instead he has embraced the lo-fi electro indie style he is known for and gone alone, from pressing the record button, to secret rituals, to designing the art, it’s one boy in his home Lodge.

The project takes a romanticized look at themes of conspiracy theories and occult knowledge. Jhonny’s surname suspiciously familiar to those schooled in the 13 Illuminati Bloodlines. Though Jhonny denies any connection, The Mystery School’s take on the subjects sometimes comes off more like an insider’s confession than an angry citizen. Could it be secret disclosure hidden in music?
