“Love Soldier is a champagne cocktail of lovers' rock, from the percolating popcorn percussions with which Top Secret cushions "Good Life" to the intergalactic stride that sends "The Beat" into orbit. Mills' lean touch carves the most ear-grabbing soul-funk here in "Cold Blooded." A wobbly kick beat gets tacked to a stumbling bass flub, and Mills drops the sparsest brass belches and harmonized chorus to back Smith's woman-done-him wrong checklist. Smith obviously knows his way around the soulful ballad, but if "Cold Blooded" is any indication of what his musical partnerships can yield, his Wonder years are still to come.”
- Bret McCabe, Baltimore City Paper

I've been real heavy into R&B the last couple years so it's nice to hear some pretty professional grade stuff coming out of Baltimore, I know there's a lot of good singers around here but very few of them have gotten together an album that sounds this polished and accomplished.

He sings with a style that is wonderfully warm throughout –not in a syrupy, too mellow-mode that can be typical of romantic male singers – but a magically flowing approach that’s really great – never forced or clichéd and with an organic quality that holds together beautifully.

Bio

Charm City’s Soul Brotha #1 is in the building and his name is J.S.O.U.L. A native of Baltimore, J.S.O.U.L has truly defined the meaning of being a singer, beat maker, writer and producer. His music captures the very essence of soul that has been absent in today’s music. Taking his cues from soul masters past and present, has inspired him to create quality music of inspiration, pain, pleasure, life, and LOVE with a style that emanates eclectic, funk-da-fied soul. A product of the longest running open mic series in Baltimore, “ORGANIC SOUL TUESDAY’S, has enabled the soulful singer to perfect his craft, while capturing the hearts and minds of his devoted fans. Releasing his first 2 demo efforts in 2001 & 2002 paved the way for his first major indie release “URBAN RETROSPECTIVE” in 2004 on the BLACKOUT STUDIOS RECORD IMPRINT. Inside it's wall's laid a body of work saturated with the production of FERTILE GROUND frontman James Collins, Joel Mills, Top Secret, and Kwesi Dawes aka (PIXEL). J.S.O.U.L sprinkled his soulful sound with the self-confidence of hip-hop, to produce an album that seemed deferential to its predecessors but remained free from the benumb hand of the past. Now with his second national/international release "LOVE SOLDIER" Lp, J.S.O.U.L has taken the entire R&B, soul, and hip hop genres to another dimension, beyond the normal chord changes, rim shots, and rhodes piano sounds. THE LOVE SOLDIER LP continues to receive great reviews nationally and internationally. Baltimore’s “City Paper” compared the album to Stevie Wonder’s collection of work from years 1971 to 1976, and Bob Dylan’s musical implementation from 1964 to 1969. The “City Paper” describes LOVE SOILDER as a “champagne cocktail of lover’s rock” – Bret McCabe. Grooves.com calls it "An excellent bit of soul"!!! "Music is what I call color in sonic form, you should get a visual whenever you hear it” – J.S.O.U.L.

In order to increase his presence in the hip-hop community, J.S.O.U.L paired up with hip-hop artist AB-ROCK and created a street ep mixtape called "THE JROCK PROJECT” which received top honors for the single “I REMEMBER” at the FORIEGN EXCHANGE OKAYPLAYER contest in 2005.

His efforts have also allowed him to grace the stage and work with various other indie talent’s such as Ledisi, Donnie, Kindred, Raheem Devaughn, Musiq Soulchild, Fertile Ground, Anthony David, Van Hunt, Julie Dexter, Lyfe Jennings, Eric Roberson, Foreign Exchange, Robin Thicke, Chrisette Michele, Bilal, Mario, Dru Hill and Dwele amongst other’s.

As if his life wasn’t busy enough, J.S.O.U.L has begun working on his latest album “BLACK SINATRA” that will host the talents of Eric Roberson, Substantial and many more.
