« Sown in Argentina, I grew up in Mexico and bloomed in Gaspe, Quebec. I thrived as a troubadour everywhere it was possible to play, sing or speak the heartfelt universal language of music ». Emotionally, culturally, and intensely integrated in the life and artistic universe of Quebecers, Juan Sebastian Larobina created, with his collaborators, a flamboyant sound, qualified by this talented multi-instrumentalist as latino-gaspesian. A course of exile, complicities and exchanges surrounding world music, a crossed creation within flamboyant meetings of styles, an artist in constant evolution with a generous inspiration.

Member or instigator of numerous groups across the years, JS Larobina displays an impressive list of realisations. Public Prize at Festival en chanson of Petite-Vallée in 2002; self-production of the multi-sensorial show Norte-Sur (2005), gathering 23 artists – many presentations “full house”, and an independent album drawn from the show (2000 copies); tele-visual presentations (Belle et Bum at Télé-Québec, Des kiwis et des homes at Radio-Canada); invitations to the four corners of the musical world (Natashquan, Tadoussac. Nunavut, Puerto Rico, Festival du bout du monde of Crozon in France); Étoile Galaxie Prize of 2006 at the autumn gathering of the ROSEQ (Regroupement des organisateurs de spectacles de l’Est du Québec).

From the stage of Montreal Francofolies to the International Nuits d’Afrique Festival, Juan Sebastian seduces a public as eclectic as his music. Invited to close Coup de coeur francophone in 2008, he repeats with the closing of Musique MultiMontreal Festival in 2009. A highly coloured character, his presence is also noticed at the International Festival Contes en Ïles of the Magdalen Islands, in September 2009.

Surrounded by accomplished multi-instrumentalists, JS Larobina invites us to a cordial, intense, effervescent and festive show with crossed flavours. Associating “no frontier” Latin rhythms to podorythmy and turlutte, this accomplished musician sails leisurely between cumbia and jigs, reels and salsa, and a song of The Bolduc to tango and funk. An assumed fusion of styles amidst an original hybrid course, researched arrangements with a marked presence of cords. Harmonica, charango, saxophone, cuatro, and banjo, also intervene to give life to this latino-gaspesian sound of contagious energy. If Spanish dominates most of Juan Sebastian’s songs, he evidently takes more and more pleasure in singing in French. Singing as much about daily matters as of uprooting, approaching serious subjects with melancholy or irony before carrying us through a bursting swirl of good humour, JS Larobina is in himself a cultural and artistic mosaic. We rush to a Juan Sebastian show for a great soul burst of laughter, for a spiced evening where bodies urge to move, for a kick at drabness and a wink at life itself!
