The ladies from the Tempe-based indie-rock trio Juicy Newt are hard to deter. Since 2003 – and despite limited prior experience with their chosen instruments – they’ve been plowing forth with gleeful determination. According to their Web site, the band is driven by a desire for “world domination through rock and roll . . . the color-coordinated, adored-by-the-masses, cheap-booze-for-all, free-lovin’ kind of domination.” Locally, they’re right on course, as they’ve amassed a steady following over the years with their pop-punk sound. - Phoenix New Times

"Juicy Newt"

By Niki D'Andrea Thursday, Jan 11 2007

Any band that calls its members "Vagina Rock Warriors" and takes its name from a pseudonym for a slutty friend must be on a sublime mission to spread its, uh, music to the menstruating masses. But the music made by the three ladies of Juicy Newt — vocalist/guitarist Annamarie Sanchez, vocalist/bassist Brenda Perkins, and drummer Sarah Bingham — doesn't have an explicitly feminist slant, nor does it harbor some sort of extreme, estrogen-addled shock-rocker vibe. The pop rock the trio produces is safe enough, even with lyrics like "Fuck you now and fuck you then" (from the stripped-down indie rock number "I Follow Through").

scheduled to perform on Saturday, January 13

The band's sound has been likened to The Go-Go's several times, and while we hate to jump on the comparison bandwagon, that's pretty damn accurate. Of the five songs here, each one bears some sonic resemblance to the sugary New Wave that Carlisle and Co. started cranking out more than two decades ago — from the beat-heavy ballad "Stalker Song" to the melancholy march of "DPS." And "The Lovely Drunk," with its dreamy-yet-simple pop-punk chord progressions and wistful crooning, sounds like a scene out of that old Go-Go's home video, minus a bleary-eyed Belinda Carlisle telling some guy with bad '80s hair that he has to jack off.

"All-Female Rock Trio Juicy Newt Reject Industry's 'Image' Norms"

Phoenix, AZ. (Top40 Charts/ Juicy Newt Official Website) - During an era in which Brittany Spears and Hillary Duff outsell actual songwriters and musicians with functioning vocal chords, it seems pop culture has elevated *** symbolism above musical talent. That's why Juicy Newt, an all-female indie rock trio from Arizona, is putting music back in the industry.

Juicy Newt's Annamarie Sanchez (guitar/lead vocals), Brenda Perkins (bass/vocals) and Sarah Bingham (drums) don't have an image to sell.
These self-proclaimed '****** Rock Warriors' are all about the music.

'The band was born in 2003 in the midst of boredom and aspirations of world domination through rock and roll,' say the Newts. 'Not the evil, oppressive, tyrannical type of domination; more the color-coordinated, adored-by-the-masses, cheap-booze-for-all, free-lovin' kind of domination.'

Juicy Newt's dynamic indie stylings have been described by Phoenix New Times as a beat-heavy fusion of rock, punk and sugary New Wave.

Their first show at the legendary Mason Jar in Phoenix cemented Juicy Newt in the consciousness of the Valley's music scene. Since then, the girls have been rocking the stage at venues across the Valley, including Trax, Andersons Fifth Estate, Jugheads, Hollywood Alley, The Stray Cat, Chasers, The Sets, Mardi Gras and The Cypress Lounge.

Juicy Newt is currently recording with musical genius Bob Hoag, producer and recorder for bands such as The Ataris, The Format, Dear and the Healights and Crash Coordinates. Their full-length debut album is scheduled for release in the spring.

Until then, fans can attend performances at AZ Overload's Anniversary Show at The Last Exit in Tempe on April 19 and The Phix in Phoenix on June 28.

Bio

Juicy Newt is an entirely female rock trio from Tempe, Arizona. The band was born in 2003 in the midst of boredom and aspirations of world domination through rock and roll. Not the evil, oppressive, tyrannical type of domination; more the color-coordinated, adored-by-the-masses, cheap-booze-for-all, free-lovin’ kind of domination. While Annamarie Sanchez (Guitar/Lead Vocals), Brenda Perkins (Bass/Vocals) and Sarah Bingham (Drums) were all musically trained in other realms and great lovers of all music not one of them had previous experience with their chosen instrument for this particular project. Undaunted, they proceeded to rock out with a “just do whatever sounds cool” philosophy. From day one they were making their own music… well, it was actually just noise at first but it quickly evolved in to a collection of aurally pleasing mosaics of sound. It took the better part of a year for the ladies to put together a sufficient number of happy, danceable, sing along type ditties about having one’s heart ripped out and repeatedly stomped on to comprise a set worthy of an audience. The first show at the legendary Mason Jar in phoenix cemented the Newt in the consciousness of the phoenix scene. Juicy Newt has been playing all over the valley and the southwest ever since. Have a listen. You might dig it. The sooner everyone’s on board, the sooner that whole “cheap booze for all” thing will come to fruition.
