"Jujuba"

...Jujuba ignites a more primal sense of movement. The funky, feel-good 11-member group's lavish use of drums creates tunes based on traditional Nigerian folk music that are sure to get you moving."

Jujuba features Nojeem Lasisi from Igbo Ora, Oyo State, in Nigeria. He ranks among the world’s elite talking drum players. Nojeem was given his first drum at age four by his father, also a master drummer, who handed down to Nojeem its powerful language. As a member of Nigerian superstar King Sunny Ade's group, the African Beats, Nojeem toured the world and appears on numerous recordings with King Sunny, including "Seven Degrees North" and "Odu”.

Nojeem has settled in the Northwest and assembled Jujuba from local musicians who all share a true love for Nigerian music. Their diverse experiences in a wide range of styles propel the project into new directions based on traditional Nigerian folk music and praise songs.

Jujuba has elicited a strong flow of positive feedback from audiences, concert promoters, festival organizers and radio disc jockeys since the band’s inception in the fall of 2002. Jujuba performs for capacity crowds at The Goodfoot Lounge every other month. The band’s Live CD has been featured and discussed on KBOO radio programs numerous times. More than 1500 concert-goers packed into the Mount Tabor Park Amphitheater to see the band on July 22nd. In August, Jujuba was proud to headline Homowo, Portland’s largest African music and dance festival. Other notable performances have taken place at the Crystal Ballroom, Northwest Folklife Festival, Northwest World Reggae Festival, Oregon Country Fair’s City Fling, Portland Rose Festival, Washington County Fair, Fez Ballroom, City Repair’s Love Festival and Earthday Festival, weddings, clubs, private parties, and many, many more.
