"Old school electric blues” is a pretty good description of what The Juke Joint Five provides. That means a dedication to the kind of music that was heard (and sometimes still is) in the Mississippi Delta juke joints that inspired the name of the band. We dig into the roots of the blues: the voices of the Chicago masters, the twang of rockabilly guitar, the raw horn-driven urban jump blues of the 1940s–50s, the ecstatic irreverence of early rock and roll. With red-hot vocals, guitar, sax, bass and drums, the Juke Joint Five is your basic blues band: as big as we need to be and no bigger. One of the things we often hear from audiences is along the lines of “I like you guys because you don’t play the same stuff as so many other blues bands—You play songs I’ve never heard before!” We like to think that what we’re doing is to remind people of a time when “the blues” meant high-energy music rooted in many different influences, and when the highest compliment was “It’s got a good beat and you can dance to it.”
