It is hard to believe that Jules Boult is so young when this cd reminds me of Smacka Fitzgibbon. I hope he doesn't take offence, but his style and the instruments he uses are so clean and simple. The cd is New Orleans jazz/blues, and he has had plenty of good raves from people with more knowledge of this genre than I! 'Mark my Words' has 11 tracks.

Within Mark My Words, a budding young Victorian blues performer Jules Boult expresses his southern side complete with banjos, fiddles and jazz piano to accompany his husky, country voice.

This is Boult’s second album release and the experience as a blues performer is starting to show. He creates a feel good, rockabilly feel to all his tracks and conveys messages of pain and despair which is essential within the blues genre. His song-writing ability is certainly one of his strong points, with exception of course to the opening line to the track 'Let Me Go Away', which states so passionately “I’ve got the blues so bad… It hurts my brain to think”. Clearly his obsession for the western genre is overwhelming while he records.

Mark My Words stays true to form within the blues genre, arpeggiated piano chords, harmonica harmonies and the traditional 12 bar blues chord progression in a few tracks. Tracks that are true indicators of the skills and potentials of Jules Boult include the instrumental at the centre of the album Going To Hanalei, the soft, beautiful ballad that is Emma Rose and the opening number Mark My Words. Each contain a portion of Boult’s heart and soul expressed with such passion for the music that we forget that blues is about the emotional pain of song-writer.

Jules Boult’s latest recording reinforces the belief that the blues cannot be killed, and even somewhere as unlikely as Melbourne, Australia, the true spirit of the traditional American genre can be reproduced in new imaginative ways that would make old blues heroes proud.

A YOUNG Melbourne musician with a taste for the arcane, Jules Boult delivers a nice line in blues and hokum. His is the poetry of plain speaking and this collection of original songs fits comfortably into a long tradition. The unforced ease of the material can raise a smile to put one in mind of the first couple of Taj Mahal albums (the ones with the late Jesse Ed Davis on guitar) — and that’s no light compliment. A good humour percolates through the music, the playing is tight but loose and, vocally, Boult doesn’t strain for effect (usually the sticking point with white blues singers). Boult plays piano, various guitars, banjo and ukulele and about him has assembled stellar collaborators, including Andy Baylor on fiddle and mandolin, Martin Cooper on pungent but understated electric guitar, Paul Gadsby on double bass, producer Chris Wilson (not the harmonica man) on piano and Jimmie Sloggett on tenor sax. And mention must be made of Aaron Richard on sousaphone — when was the last time you heard a sousaphone on a record?
