"'Glimpses' album review"

“It is probably a good time to be Colchester singer songwriter Julian Shome.

With the likes of James Blunt and Jack Johnson blazing a way for original solo artists I can see Julian's debut album Glimpses doing very well indeed.

Not that Julian is a carbon copy of those two artists as his music flits all around the musical genres from instrumental melody to indie pop.

For me it is the poppy opener, Bang The Gun, which is the stand out track, a glorious catchy little number with a simple super riff coupled with a marvellous horn arrangement.

That and the last song, the title track Glimpses, marks Julian out as a songwriter of enormous talent and potential.

Sometimes a cross between French sound gods Air and British quirky pop genius Badly Drawn Boy, Julian's instrumental pieces were on the whole delightful and showed his knack at capturing an atmosphere with sublime melodies.

But if I was a betting man I reckon it is songs like Bang The Gun where he is really going to make a name for himself.”

Bio

Julian’s childhood was surrounded by music- his father was and still is a great jazz guitarist and the radio was his mother’s constant companion, filling the family home with the warm soul sounds of 60s and 70s legends who became Julian’s inspiration. Julian absorbed the teachings of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Lennon and McCartney, Brian Wilson, Sly Stone and others. With a guitar he bought in his teens from the proceeds of his Saturday job at the local garden centre, he started penning his own early tunes, performing them first at the Colchester Labour Club when just 15 years old.

But with travel and adventure in his family history – (his mother was the first baby girl born inside the walls of the infamous Changi Prison in Singapore during WWII and his father jumped onto a cargo ship from Singapore in the 60s bound for Europe, working the engine room for his passage, not knowing what would greet him at his destination) – Julian soon looked beyond the small town Roman Walls of Colchester and moved to London to broaden his musical horizons.

After 5 years gigging, developing his songwriting and producing skills, and putting together the first few tracks that would become his debut album, Julian was looking much further westward to craft his sound. Selling his home in London and leaving everything behind, he set off across the Atlantic with a guitar and a portable digital multi-track recorder, finally settling in Vancouver, Canada. Travelling on down the West Coast of the USA, Julian put the finishing touches to his debut album, ‘Glimpses’, recording the acclaimed opener ‘Bang the gun’ in his San Francisco apartment. During his travels, Julian would meet the like-minded musicians who would eventually form the basis for the group who would record the tracks for his second album, ‘Black Light’, which was released in 2007.

Julian’s music has captured imaginations on both sides of the Atlantic, receiving enthusiastic reviews and radio play across the UK and USA including BBC Local Radio and the Asian Network. With album sales in USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Europe and Australia, Julian has proved himself as an independent worldwide selling artist.

With a growing fanbase, particularly in the USA and UK, Julian set up his own record label, Icyshore Records, to release his ever growing catalogue.
