Biography

“When I first heard the song “Descartes” by Julie Larocque, I was instantly hooked. It's difficult to combine imagination, originality and a great voice...Observatory accomplishes just that! The world needs to know who Julie Larocque is.”

-Johnny Michaels
Music Director for My Broadcasting Corporation

(Songs "Descartes", "Virginia" and "Cold Snap" are in regular rotation.)

That's the kind of reaction every musician wants to receive when they send their music to A/C and Dance radio stations. Julie Larocque's 3rd album Observatory was a recipient of the Popular Music Grant from the Ontario Arts Council, and has been generating rave reviews from critics and colleagues. Produced by Jason Jaknunas (Souljazz Orchestra, Eric Vieweg, Jupiter Ray Project) at Metropolitan Studios in Ottawa, Observatory is a 10-song collection of Electronica music with subtle flavours of World and Jazz vibes.

Julie is well-known throughout the Valley as the afternoon drive time host on MYFM Radio (www.myfmradio.ca). Julie graduated in 1998 from Ryerson Polytechnic University with a BAA in Radio & Television Arts, and she is currently developing a television series called Ottawa Valley Woman for COGECO.

Lyrics

Dog Woman

Written By: Julie Larocque

VERSE 1:
Stars hide behind the mask of daylight / They’re presence in an afternoon dream / When the sun shines behind / The darkness of a lonely night

VERSE 2:
Well you’re high then you’re low, never one place for long / You never really cope with change
Time is a leash pulling on your neck, and it’s starting to show the strain / You pray for the gift of the courage of faith, and patience in adversity / But you keep trailblazing through, you can never look back, it’s a no win guarantee

BRIDGE
Happy are those among the lonely hearted
Happy was the day they departed
Happy are the years before we started living

CHORUS
You become edible calling on Dog Woman
You become edible calling on Dog Woman

VERSE 3:
We live within the paradox
Where freedoms come through submission / And greed that drives my ambition / Denies the time that is meant for you

VERSE 4:
Everywhere they come lashing out their tongues / There’s no reason no decent explanation / You throw up both your arms, you’ve all but given up / There’s a limit to what you take / But the cycle will repeat it don’t skip a beat/ And you’re back in the same old situation / You fall harder every time, and you cannot trust your mind / It’s the sacrifice you make

2nd BRIDGE
Every time I cave in to my addiction
I’m pushing all your patience to the limit
The hardest thing is really choosing what matters

CHORUS
You become edible calling on Dog Woman
You become edible calling on Dog Woman

I've Got This Room Virginia

Written By: Julie Larocque

I can’t feel myself tonight
I’d go inside but I’m locked out
Starving for experience
As I take the cloak off my conscience

CHORUS
I’ve got this room Virginia
I’ve got this room of my own
I’ve got this room Virginia
I’ve got this room of my own

I will try to hear my heart
I will draw my portrait in the dark
Collapsed before the thoughts could submerge
But I still have the deepest urge

CHORUS
I’ve got this room Virginia
I’ve got this room of my own
I’ve got this room Virginia
I’ve got this room of my own

Now I can feel each thought pass
They range from one to a thousand
At last they found a way to merge
But they died before I could say a word

CHORUS
I’ve got this room Virginia
I’ve got this room of my own
I’ve got this room Virginia
I’ve got this room of my own

Cold Snap

Written By: Julie Larocque

VERSE 1:
Snow drifts like smoke across the road / Fish tail I’m spinning back and forth / Landscape in monochromatic scale / All this just to get to you

VERSE 2:
Filled up my card declined again
Credit stretched to the maximum
Wondering where money will come from / All this starts to get to you

CHORUS
Heavy days give me sunshine
Lift the cloud that’s hanging over like a weight upon your shoulders
I just know you’ll never compromise
We seem to manage for the most part but the damage has been done
And a cold snap remains

VERSE 3:
Sound check my heart is in my throat / This is what I’ve been working for / Wondering what drives me to perform / I did it all out of love for you

VERSE 4:
Coasting on empty once again /
Seems like an old recurring theme
Time to move on to better gigs /
You’ve got to be looking out for you

CHORUS
Heavy days give me sunshine
Lift the cloud that’s hanging over like a weight upon your shoulders
I just know you’ll never compromise
We seem to manage for the most part but the damage has been done
And a cold snap remains

Bridge Instrumental

Repeat Chorus
