The smoothness of Sade, the power of Chaka Khan and the sweetness of Ella Fitzgerald- spiced with songwriting influences from Annie Lennox to Fleetwood Mac.

Biography

Combining pop, jazz & funk in fresh new ways, Canadian vocalist Julie Mahendran's sophomore album, LOVELIGHT, provides the perfect showcase for her clear and powerful sound. In addition to four soulful new original tracks, Julie has crafted unique arrangements of songs from artists including Bill Withers, Cyndi Lauper, Sade and Annie Lennox.

Born in Montreal and raised in Edmonton, Julie has lived in London and New York as well as Boston, where she was a scholarship student at Berklee College of Music. Early influences- including classical piano, disco & 80s pop- soon led to a love of jazz and the thrill of studying with Cheryl Bentyne of the Manhattan Transfer.

Her first CD release, NEVER DO WITHOUT YOU, showcased sparse "chordless trio" arrangements of jazz and pop standards- and enjoyed radio airplay as well as rave reviews worldwide. After showcasing on both North American coasts and in Europe, Julie was invited to record for CBC Radio's national Jazzbeat program. She now calls Toronto home and her latest album features local talents Joanna Borromeo (keys), Michael Herring (bass), Brennan Louw (guitar), and Giampaolo Scatozza (drums).

Lyrics

Tip of my Tongue

Written By: Julie Mahendran

You’re on the tip of my tongue
Gonna let you linger
Cause I don’t wanna forget
But I can’t quite remember
Your taste, your touch
Your face when you blush
Is still a mystery to me

I’m in the palm of your hand
I’m in the warmth of your smile
But the spell only lasts for awhile
And then you’re gone
But you’re still on the tip of my tongue

I take a sip and I’m done
I sense that I’m in danger
Cause I don’t wanna regret
And you’re still a stranger
Your taste, your touch
Your face when you blush
Is still a mystery to me

I’m in the palm of your hand
I’m in the warmth of your smile
But the spell only lasts for awhile
And then you’re gone
But you’re still on the tip of my tongue

You’re right there
But not quite there
You’re right there
But I can’t put my finger on you

Have Mercy

Written By: Julie Mahendran

I didn’t know
What I had done
So bright was the sun
It blinded me
Invited me in
And I was hypnotized
Mesmerized
In its gaze
‘Til I was drowning in my ecstasy

Have mercy, have mercy... on me

When the sun is gone
In the dead of night
And I have no strength left to fight
I’m sorry
Our story is done
I stand here paralyzed
Compromised
Full of shame
And so I sing this guilty rhapsody

Have mercy, have mercy... on me

And I will never be so far gone
I will admit when I am wrong
And for my sins I will atone
Because the blame is mine alone

Have mercy, have mercy... on me

Killer

Written By: Julie Mahendran

Was it the way you walked
Or maybe the way you looked
Don't know what the bait was baby
But you know you had me hooked
Now I think about you
Can't get you off my mind
Don't know what it was about baby
But you must be one-of-a-kind

You're a killer, uh-huh
You're a killer, uh-huh
You're a killer, uh-huh
But you're too damn hard to find

I wish I knew your voice
I wish I knew your name
I know I didn't have the time
But it hurt me all the same
I know your eyes were on me
I felt you look my way
I know we both felt something baby
But I didn't know what to say

You were a killer, uh-huh
You were a killer, uh-huh
You were a killer, uh-huh
When I saw you that fine day

So help me
Think I'm drowning in your eyes
Woah help me
And it comes as no surprise
Woah help me
Cause there's nothing I can say
Nothing I can do
To get through to you

I hate regrets
And I hate remorse
I hate to admit it baby
But you know you are the source
Gotta get you off my mind
Gotta lock my heart up tight
Gotta stop thinkin' about you now
Before you haunt my dreams at night

You're a killer, uh-huh
You're a killer, uh-huh
You're a killer, uh-huh
But it's time to set things right

There Must Be Disco

Written By: Julie Mahendran

He's a good boy
Does his job
Pays his taxes on time
Loves his mama
Treats her right
Sleeps well when he lays down his head at night

Works so hard all week
To barely make ends meet
We all need a way to release

Sometimes when Friday comes
There must be drinking
There must be disco

She's a good girl
Goes to school
Does her homework on time
Loves her boyfriend
Treats him right
Gives him love when he lays down with her at night

Works so hard all week
To barely make ends meet
We all need a way to release

Sometimes when Friday comes
There must be drinking
There must be disco

Please please won't you come out tonight
Please please be cosmopolite
