Feeling a bit camera shy

Bio

When I first heard Jeff Buckley, I was stunned by his voice and quickly realized I was listening to musical genius. How can you describe in words the way a person can draw you into their beauty? I’ve been inspired by his work ever since I heard “Grace” for the first time in 1996. It would be an incredible honor to be chosen to pay tribute to Jeff’s life and work.

Track 1: Don’t Explain
Jeff’s cover of “Lilac Wine” was the reason I submitted this song. Nina Simone was a major influence in both of our lives.

Track 2: So Real
“So Real” was almost never recorded – the drummer backed out at the last minute and we were lucky enough to find a replacement. Everything about it felt right, even though I couldn’t believe I was attempting to cover Jeff Buckley! I wanted to feel his presence in the room even more, so I asked the sound engineer if he could put Jeff’s voice on the track after the guitar break. The end of the tune is very emotional - I was singing like he was sitting there in the room right in front of me. I really like the way it turned out.

Track 3: Memories
I wrote this song around the same time that “Last Goodbye” was being recorded and produced. The songs are so similar in subject that I knew I wanted to submit it for this opportunity right away. To this day, I am very proud of this song.

Track 4: Last Goodbye
I love this song and after Jeff’s death, I just wanted to say goodbye to him in a way he would appreciate – through music.

Track 5: Unthinkable
A producer friend of mine asked me to write something for the soundtrack of the independent film “Speak”. Jeff’s influence on me is evident in this tune by the way I tried to keep it simple while still packing an emotional punch.

What a powerful, personal (and for me & Jeff, necessary) experience it is to perform live.
