"SESAC NYC Rising: Winners announced!"

Diverse group of five great artists rises to the top of artist development program sponsored by SESAC, Brooklyn Industries, ReverbNation & The MuseBox – indy rock, hip-hop, singer/songwriters, and more!


Winners have been announced for the 2011 NYC Rising Musician Scholarship program. Sponsored by SESAC, Brooklyn Industries, ReverbNation & The MuseBox, the competition features up and coming tri-state area artists and their music. A panel of judges narrowed the list from over 800 submissions to a list of 16 finalists, and then the public had their say. The votes are in, and five NYC area artists have been chosen for the chance of a lifetime.

Julien Funk creates a unique blend of folk rock and melodic pop music that has fans of both The National and John Mayer lining up to see him live. Following the release of his EP, “Another Reason (to lie to yourself)”, Julien has garnered nation-wide media attention and commercial radio play. An East Village transplant from Canada, he has already immersed himself in the New York music scene having played shows at Arlene's Grocery, Rockwood Music Hall, National Underground, and Living Room. - SESAC

Julien Funk & The Painted Thief are a New York-based band creating a gritty, soulful and sexy mix of alt-rock and melodic-pop.

The band is building considerable momentum following the release of the ‘Painted Thief’ EP. Their single ‘Look Me Up’ won grand prize in the NYC Rising 2011 contest from among 800+ applicants. Since joining forces in New York from abroad (Canada, Italy, Singapore), the band was off to a fast start by playing their first show during CMJ 2011. Notable New York accomplishments include performances at Webster Hall and Piano’s during the 2011 CMJ festival, shows at Arlene's Grocery, Bitter End, and Rockwood Music Hall and airplay from Q104.3FM tri-state commercial radio.

The lineup consists of songwriter Julien Funk on lead vocals & guitar, Tom Wyman plays fretless bass guitar and Archelao Macrillo puts out on the drums.
