"Ridge HS student’s band to warm up crowd for the Jonas Brothers"

Julius Trombino was sitting on the beach in Newport, R.I., enjoying some sun when his dad approached him with what he thought was a prank.
“He walked over and said you got a gig opening for the Jonas Brothers,” Trombino said. “I said ‘Nah, no I didn’t.’ I thought it was a joke.”
It wasn’t.

Trombino’s aptly named band, Julius, was asked by LiveNation -- who is managing the Jonas Brothers’ current tour -- to appear on a side stage at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, N.Y. Trombino, drummer Mike Place, guitarists Matt Funabashi and Chris Greatti, bassist Sean Kravits and keyboard player Bridget Sweeney will warm up the crowd ahead of the New Jersey trio’s Aug. 21 show.

“I’m in awe, it’s incredible,” Trombino said Tuesday. “I never thought I’d be playing with an act like the Jonas Brothers, I mean they’re the biggest of the big time. It’s an honor.”

Julius’ father, Gary Trombino, said the offer caught them by surprise.

Unbeknownst to them, a representative from Disney -- which represents tween-pop superstars and New Jersey natives the Jonas Brothers -- appeared on internet radio station Goom Radio in early July to promote the trio’s upcoming show at Jones Beach.

According to Gary Tromino, the radio host was asked if he knew anyone that would make a good warm-up act for the show. The host mentioned the pop-rock group Julius and days later Gary Trombino was watching a contract print out of his fax machine.

“When I first got the call, I thought it was a goof. But two hours later I had the contract in my hands,” Gary Trombino said. “It blows my mind actually.”

Julius will play at 5:30 p.m. ahead of Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers, who themselves were raised in Wyckoff.

Though the show represents a chance for broader exposure for Trombino, he has already accomplished a great deal at 16. He has won two international songwriting competitions and has performed showcases for major record labels like Virgin Atlantic and Universal.

But Trombino said he understands the opportunity opening for a multi-platinum artist like the Jonas Brothers represents and his band isn’t taking it lightly.

“We’re working our butts off,” he said.

Julius Trombino Interview
PopStar: When did you discover that singing and song writing were your passion?

Julius: Probably when I was in seventh grade and I went to Powercord Academy at St. John’s University in New York. When I got home, I had a recording system waiting for me and I have never looked back.

PopStar: How would you describe your type of music?

Julius: A lot of the songs you will hear are slow, love songs. They all have the theme of love to them but they are all very poppy.

PopStar: Where do you like to write your music?

Julius: A lot of the lyrics I write are at night while I am in bed. I write them on my phone and save them as drafts on my text messages.

PopStar: Do you enjoy playing on stage?

Julius: I love performing; so much fun. Sometimes I get a little nervous, it is not that I am afraid to play; I just get a little nervous sometimes. But I just really love being on stage.

PopStar: What happens to lyrics you do not use?

Julius: Well usually what happens is that I will have a bunch of lyrics that I have not used and I will put them into poems.

PopStar: What kind of music is on your Ipod?

Julius: I can never choose an artist so I have it on shuffle the whole time. I like listening to a wide range of genres from Beethoven to Gwen Stacey.

PopStar: Can you tell us what you are working on currently?

Julius: I am working on a song that I want to send into American Idol as the inspirational song. I started writing some lyrics and it is very inspirational about life’s journey.
