"Staying Gold As Told"

MUSIC
June Marieezy

Easy, breezy June Marieezy.

One time, I happened to chance upon her Facebook fan page, and there lies a relatively long message of a man giving out his number - and possibly, his heart - to the girl who "left an impression" on him after having a salsa session with her one night in Malasimbo (on where she once performed). Crucial information? Definitely not. But like that guy, there was an impression left indeed on my end by this girl.

Marieezy did not trend, but spoken instead in hushed voices, resulting to a cult following. Making the rounds in Twitter for some time in the recent past, I just had to check it out. Texas-bred but purely Filipina, June is true to her soul. And music. Just when I thought Manila was going hipster on me, her scat redefined my taste.

She of the voice that glides oh-so-smooth.
Check out her latest track, Think About, as well as her most popular video Sometimes, shot entirely in the streets of Manila. Accompanied by Justin de Guzman's beats and with RBTO (of Fliptop fame) kicking rhymes, we definitely have a winner here. She alone could master the art, but wait till she collaborates. She'll be slapping your eardrums with joy and frenzy. World class, indeed.

"June Marieezy: World in Motion Online Article"

In between rubbing elbows with Erykah Badu and Robert Glasper and performing at SXSW 2013, formerly Manila-based soul and hip-hop artist JUNE MARIEEZY talks to STATUS about trying to make it on her own, missing Manila, and creating her new EP, Contagious.

“I warn people that if they affect me in a certain way, it’s just a matter of time before they end up in my art.”
When did you find out you can sing?
My earliest memories of music was singing my own melodies before I could speak. When I could finally speak, I was that kid who would rush up onstage saying, “I can do it! I can do it!” and start singing and dancing. I also remember my dad singing and improvising on the keyboard in the morning. I loved waking up to that. There was a phase though when my dad tried shoving karaoke down my system making me join singing contests and charity events. It made me reject singing for a good amount years. On a side note, I became more focused on basketball during that time along with some acting classes. Fun fact: Barney was my acting coach.

For most of us, we can only find out about you from what the press say. How would your friends describe you though?
“Sweet. Real. Dedicated. Driven. Appreciated. Missed.” – Justin of Deeper Manila
_NHS2967

“I also remember my dad singing and improvising on the keyboard in the morning. I loved waking up to that.”
You’re part of Deeper Manila. How’s the relationship like between you and the label?
Forever human companions.

How deep in Manila have you gone? [Laughs]
I used to live in Taft Avenue. I was living on my own for five years since age 16. I learned how to commute via busses, trains, and jeepneys. Taxi drivers always screwed me over because they thought I had all the money that I didn’t have just because I spoke English. Even wrote a song about it out of frustration. So my friend and I bought cheap second-hand Japanese bikes to get around everywhere. I got lost a lot but met so many interesting people and heard their stories along the way. Being lost on a bike showed me a different side of adventure and brought me to intimate places. The feeling sets my soul on fire in a good way.

What’s the best thing about Dallas? What about Manila?
The best (and worst) thing about Dallas is that it is extremely business-oriented. I’ve been learning ways to help my art thrive financially. The best thing about Manila is that the people are one of the most unique and loving people I’ve ever met. Especially with artists, their music is inspired by the beautiful islands and their unique history. There is so much to express about. So many rare gems in the Philippines.
_NHS3208

“Taxi drivers always screwed me over because they thought I had all the money that I didn’t have just because I spoke English. Even wrote a song about it out of frustration. “
Are you working on an album right now? How’s that going?
I’m working on an EP called Contagious. Shout out to Justin De Guzman from Deeper Manila. It’s going well. We’re finishing it up actually. Since I’m in Austin right now and thousands of people are clogging up the streets, I shot a music video with Austin-based videographer Carlos Garcia for one of the tracks on the EP called “Faces.” I’m excited to share all this new material with everyone very soon.

Are there certain rules you follow (or break) when making music?
Not really. I just put down whatever I hear in my head and try to keep the flow and feel right. Sometimes I can’t release certain tracks because they are too fresh from the oven with whatever situation it’s about. I warn people that if they affect me in a certain way, it’s just a matter of time before they end up in my art.

"Honest Critiques from Industry Experts at R&B/Hip-Hop Listening Panel"

For my first panel on my second day of the ASCAP EXPO, I decided to sit in on the R&B/Hip-Hop song feedback panel. As the moderator read the bios of the panelists, it was just reconfirmation that the ASCAP EXPO is a yearly event that all aspiring music creators need to attend. What an incredible opportunity to be heard by senior-level music executives at some of the biggest music companies such as BET, Columbia, Universal Music Publishing and others. They were all in this room.

The songwriter that most stood out to me was a singer-songwriter from the Philippines named June Marieezy. I could tell she was eager and excited to have her song heard, but her voice was soft and barely audible. That's why when her song started playing, I was taken aback. Her singing voice, her lyrics, her melodies and the care she put into the quality of the mix took me by surprise.

Panels like this one are exactly the kind that aspiring music creators need to attend. Not only did all the panelists give their contact information at the end of the panel for further song submissions, they all gave honest feedback. The only kind that can truly help a songwriter develop.

"NEW TRACK: Rjay Feat. June Marieezy - "Catch You""

Rjay has dropped the video for his soon-to-be urban smash, “Catch You” featuring this blog's favorite girl, June Marieezy. We know this song is going to be huge, with such vibrant commercial appeal and stoked-for-summer vibe working for it. And did we just smell a single of the year stamp on this? That sticky chorus hook that leaves an indelible mark? That hook-up that reeks of undeniable chemistry? Whatever your thoughts are, this is certainly good pop music you can enjoy to while sipping down on your tropical tea.

"People's Future new EP out soon!"

We’ve always been supportive of underrated acts who continue to push their artistic envelope despite the lack of support from major labels and gig productions. Filipino rap collective, People’s Future embodies such inimitable vision that we truly admire, bringing social consciousness and lyrical patriotism back to modern hiphop. After months and months of waiting, we’re glad to know that they’re finally all set to release their forthcoming EP What The Dilis which features collaboration with June Marieezy, Nyko Maca and Tao Aves.

As a tease to the new record, they’ll be previewing EP tracks this Friday, March 30 at the Vito Crew Listening Party happening at the Offbeat Café in Makati. Duende and RBTO will also be playing unreleased albums, with guest performers that include Similar Objects, June Marieezy, Justin De Guzman, just to name a few. The event is for the benefit of the farmers of Hacienda Luisita, so make sure to drop by and support the cause!

For those who aren’t oriented with People’s Future, here’s a track called “Latest News" available for streaming.

Heavy Eyes

Well, fuck it. Despite not cracking mainstream radio charts and Pinoy MYX Countdown, this minimalist R&B banger has everything a contemporary smash should be. Its hooks are downright catchy and appealing, a summer jam that you’d want to hear all year long whether you’re grinding in the club or stuck in traffic. You could even mistake it for a post-millennial Aaliyah number with an old school hiphop vibe or a B-side to a Cassie song, only that June Marieezy has that distinct soulfulness glazed in thin, honeyed form—light and sexy, but never too showy.

Good thing it didn’t explode the way it should have been. “Sometimes” didn’t even shoot up into minor hit territory, but it was pretty much inescapable this year. It was the song that launched June Marieezy to cult favorite status, becoming the underdog that we root for in the sea of talentless hacks singing covers on TV and slutting their way to tacky mall shows. We’ve all wish that every frigging pop star owns half of June’s charisma and style, if not commercial appeal. - Vandals on the Wall (January 1, 2013)

"JUNE MARIEEZY - LOVER? + PYRAMIDS (FRANK OCEAN) 2/07/2013"

Deeper Manila Records' June Marieezy comes up with this soulful and smooth track with a nice infusion of hiphop right under it. The song is intended to be for her friends, but it has turned out to be bigger than what it is, as the video continues to rake in hit after hit. Comprised of beats by Justin De Guzman and mixed in with Frank Ocean's Pyramid in the middle of the song - and she sings over it with her own original lyrics. The former Philippines-based underground indie singer continues to woo people with her unique take on music and her amazing vocals. It is definitely nice to see her coming up with original and fresh music once again every since moving to Dallas, Texas - her highly influential style can be credited to the perfect mix of hiphop, RnB, soul and jazz. "Kaplow"

Kaplow.

This video is…

1. …exactly why I do what I do.

Why I can never turn my back on this country. Why I fight to leave but only to come running back with more ideas, and renewed commitment to letting our voices be heard and setting our heartbeats loose. Heartbeats, with melodies laced on top of them, lyrics lingering only long enough for us to say “yes…this”. Heartbeats, interrupted by breath held, skateboard wheels grating against metal, the exhilaration, the anticipation…the air.

2. …a glimpse at what is in the hearts and minds of our youth.

Parents need not be afraid in this country. Children stay close enough to home to kiss their parents on the cheek more than once a week. Families still pray together. But this generation…their imaginations and passion run free, and they know the world is not a world of confinement, but one of abundance. They know that for as much as there is war, the capacity that love has to overcome it exists. They have seen excellence - if not in real life, then from someone else’s…online. Access has given them an opportunity to recognize what they do and do not want. This has made all the difference.

3. …a collaboration of talent.

And the spirit of collaboration, of sharing, of building, and uplifting - this is the spirit that the people in this video have lent me. So to Gef - and his commitment to empowering his peers by communicating messages with his video camera and outofscratch.com, to June - and her choice to stay true to her heart song, and to NixDamnP - and his courage for fighting for what nobody else sees or believes…

…you are the why, the what, and the how.

"If you like The Roots and Erykah Badu, you’ll definitely love this.."

If you like The Roots and Erykah Badu, you’ll definitely love this..

So I woke up early this morning to catch Sarah Meier and Cesca Litton on KC Montero’s radio show on 89.1. They were playing all these cool songs, some of which I haven’t heard in a very long time. And Dr. Dre’s Nuthin’ But A G Thang was one of them.

Anyway, a few minutes after that Dre song, Sarah Meier played a track that captured my ears. It was called Sometimes by June Marieezy. The track was so awesome and smooth. It was very laid back and relaxing. It was raining hard when I heard it, so it really set the mood. If you like listening to The Roots, Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, you’ll definitely love June Marieezy.

A little background check, June is a 19-yr old (according to Sarah Meier) singer-songwriter from Dallas, Texas who is now residing in the country. Coincidentally, Erykah Badu hails from Dallas, Texas too (no wonder there’s a resemblance in their music).

If you listen to her voice, she sounds like a much slicker, cooler, hiphop version of Adele. FOR TRUE.

She’s scheduled to release an EP entitled Heavy Eyes under Deeper Manila Records this June 18 at Yadu, The Collective, Malugay st. in Makati. So that’s certainly worth checking out.

If you love the musical fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and soul, June Marieezy is someone to watch out for.

"NEW VID: THE GOODNESS"

Posted on May 5, 2011 by Clavel Magazine
First off…I’d like to remind everyone about our Nationwide tour with 4HIT COMBO. Now that’s out of the way…

I crave for inspiration. Every single day. The search, the hunt, the discovery. The exhilaration and sensations that I get from finding it, touching it, breathing in it’s intoxicating scent, and tasting it’s glorious flavors.

Inspiration. It drives your motivation which in turn makes your grind a little bit harder, which makes your hustle a little more faster, that stokes the fires of your passion to whole new level.

The trick is to sustain it. To PROGRESS from point A to point B, and everywhere in between, and affect every real relationship that you have to create a change that will spread faster than spam on Facebook.

It’s our time to make ourselves happen. It’s time for THE GOODNESS. This is inspiration.

Watch and learn kiddos. Watch and learn. It’s another one from OUT OF SCRATCH, hear what’s all behind the rave of the gorgeous @JUNEMARIEEZY, and NIXDAMNP on point with the beats. - Clavel Magazine Posted on May 5, 2011

"MMF COUNTDOWN 7: June Marieezy"

For many Pinays with mighty pipes, the goal is to hit recording jackpot in the US. Get signed, release an album, conquer Billboard’s charts—all in the land of milk and honey.

Here’s one Pinay who begs to differ: meet June Marieezy, the Stateside-born Cebuana who is thrilled to be making a name for herself as a soul and hip-hop songstress right here in the Philippines.

Originally from Dallas, Texas, June jetted off to Manila in 2008 and has been in an ongoing love affair with the Philippines since. Finding herself smack-dab in the middle of Manila’s gritty gray landscape obviously did wonders for her creativity: she enrolled in a music production course and has been throwing herself into musical projects, showing no signs of slowing down.

After a stint doing vocals for alternative band Good Morning High Fives, June eventually found her musical groove by mixing soul, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and rock. This fusion of styles is the sound that is taking her to different stages and places, including theMalasimbo Music & Arts Festival 2012 held in Puerto Galera.

June recently released the EP Heavy Eyes, an urban soul gem under local independent label Deeper Manila. Although she travels back and forth between Dallas and Manila, think of Heavy Eyes as her love letter to our madcap culture, which she is discovering—and loving—more and more with each day she spends here.

Hit play on the videos below to sample some of June’s songs, including her super chill toast to the warm weather months,“Summertime”.

"(June Marieezy Bio Update)"

JUNE MARIEEZY is a DALLAS, TEXAS BASED singer-songwriter FRESH FROM MANILA, PHILIPPINES where she studied music production and involved herself in the underground music scene which challenged her R&B style to a burst of genres from rock, soul, jazz and experimental.

MANILA'S CULTURE itself had a big impact on June’s writing influences as she fell in love with her country, learned how to cope with the dirty city, and alternatively sipped on coconut juice on the surreal islands. Believe it or not, she used to be in a rock band for three years, but a girl from the South could not be satisfied without her soul and hip hop roots. That is where she called home to DEEPER MANILA.

TOGETHER WITH DEEPER MANILA head honcho, JUSTIN DE GUZMAN, June Marieezy put into sound her various experiences in Manila, making “Heavy Eyes” a compilation of soundtracks tailor-made for those who spend most of their time in the big city; the honking traffic, the air pollution, the overpopulation of people cramming onto the train, the hassle that adds on extra stress to our day. But with this sound trip, we can finally drown out all the hustle and bustle to make our way around the city more enjoyable.

UNWIND and let the music take control.

"Catch You by Rjay x June Marieezy"

Rapper Rjay teams up with singer June Marieezy for the single “Catch You”. The storyline for the music video is touching. A guy stands by his girl after she’s gotten into an accident. Previously, she was a dancer, but is now confined to a wheelchair, where she expresses herself through painting. Love keeps them together through the disabilities and scars. The video reminds us of short film Represent. You can download the song FREE here.

"12 MOST ANTICIPATED OPM ALBUMS OF 2012"

June Marieezy’s trippy neo-soul jam, “Sometimes” is a solid proof that viral marketing is the next big gun that independent musicians should consider big in relaying their music to a wider audience. We were amazed at how on its first day, the music video cracked 4,561 hits and went on to become one of the most successful viral music vids to ever graced 2012. Under the tutelage of Manila-based record label, Deeper Manila, June is expected to release her solo album on the first quarter of 2012, featuring collaborations with Silverfilter, RBTO and Justin De Guzman. Now that is something to look forward to. - Vandals on the Wall (02/03/12)

"Manila Music Festival: My Top 5 Highlights"

I have been following her music for months now, and I was ecstatic to finally see this talented Texan perform live with her Manila-based posse, Deeper Manila. As if sprinkled with a little bit of Erykah Badu, June’s soulful jazzy voice is a standout from the hordes of cover-obsessed and pretentious musicians that pollute the local music industry. She was about to end her set when fans such as myself screamed for more, and I was thrilled when she sang my favorite June Marieezy track, “Sometimes.” - katewashere (05/06/12)

"June Marieezy: My New Favorite Soul (Indie) Girl"

Labor day was not actually a rest day for my sister and I. I was so set to make use of this day free from the concrete jungle day for music from the scorchy afternoon until the wee hours of the morning. That just actually happened because I was given a media pass (thank you When In Manila – http://www.wheninmanila.com and Manila Music Festival – http://www.manilamusicfestival.com) and a plus one of course for my sister, Jen, who actually helped me take pictures of “me” haha.

Manila Music Festival (I wrote an entry: http://wanderinganneskie.blogspot.com/2012/04/manila-music-festival-may-1-2012.html and http://www.wheninmanila.com/manila-music-festival-first-ever-music-festival-in-manila-happening-on-may-1-2012/ ) is the first ever music fest in Manila which turned out to be very exciting for all festival lovers out here in the Metro. I missed out on the Malasimbo Music and Arts Festival for 2 years in a row due to the location and difficulty in getting people to join me as I have very limited number of friends who are into music fests or indie bands plus the schedule at work always messes up my game. So this time, with or without media pass I was dead set on going to this fest to be part of this momentous event in Manila.

I must warn you though this is not going to be entirely about the fest, I will have a separate post about it. As you can see its about one artist who caught my ears that day and eyes coz she was “water-gunning” people all over come late at night haha. Here are some pictures I took during her performance. As always, please do not steal my photos, I worked hard taking and editing them, you can share but please don’t take out my watermark. Thanks a bunch. Anyway, here we go:

Who is June Marieezy? June is a singer-songwriter from Dallas, Texas who is now residing in Manila, Philippines since 2008. Manila’s underground indie scene challenged her RNB style to a burst of genres from rock, soul, jazz, and experimental. Manila’s culture itself has a big impact on June’s writing influences while she falls in love with her country, learns how to cope with the dirty city, and alternatively sips on coconut juice on the surreal islands. Since 2008, she has been in an alternative rock band called Good Morning High Fives. But a girl from the South simply cannot be satisfied without her soul and hip hop roots. That is where she calls home to Deeper Manila.

That’s taken out from her website and manila music fest line up profile.

At first, I really was not too sure what to expect since it would be the first time I’ll be seeing her perform. I heard about her and saw her name but never really had the chance to listen to her songs. Boy was I dead wrong about it. Sorry for sleeping way too long in the sewers, June. I got out of it the second you sang! When it was her set, people started gathering near the main stage, this was an indication that the next performer would be worth the standing and losing the personal space a person dearly loves. Some random guy also started shouting, “I Love You”! I couldn’t blame him, what is there not to love about her as an artist? Besides she was easy on the eyes for a lot of the guys out in the field too. Then others started requesting songs, which I knew nothing about (yeah, you can kick me in the shins).

Her set was perfect. All performers were great but hers was my top favorite. It was my little perfect infinite moment that day. Great lyrics, great melody, great voice and great songs during the most perfect and my personal favorite time of the day, the sun setting. She sounded like a toned down Erykah Baduh while the sun was setting. Well that is just me. I will definitely get the EP soon as I get my weekend off. June Marieezy is definitely my new indie soul girl. I am a fan!

So guys, appreciate our own, to know more about her check these - wandering anneski (05/06/12)

"FHM: Manila Music Fest: A Hazy Recollection of the Top Performances"

June Marieezy
This US-based Cebuana has been making Netizens fall head over heels in love with her cool and crisp vocal chops via YouTube music videos. Her EP, Heavy Eyes, is a jewel that’s rough around the edges but soft and sweet at the very core.

Audience reaction: Everyone seemed under a spell as this nubile ingénue hit every note with a refreshing iciness enough to dry the sweat beads forming on their foreheads.

Need to know: Based in Dallas, Texas she flies back and forth to the country when she needs to perform. Her EP is a charismatic homage to the Pinoy culture and roots that she’s clearly come to recognize and embrace.

Sounds like: We’re hearing a heavy influence of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott here. She might not think so, but there’s an obvious allusion to these female soul masters.
Best listened to: We’d recommend her music for couples who, like her set that day, like to start a day with a soft and tender kiss, and like to end the night getting hot and heavy.

"June Marieezy: The future of music"

Looking back at my experiences from 2011, I vividly remember feeling a bit down on this certain day of December. That memory stuck to me like it did because I knew the feeling all too well: I had to say goodbye to yet another person. I’ve had many friends leave the country and have almost become accustomed to the routine of bidding someone farewell and maintaining a long distance friendship instead. Despite the familiarity of the feeling, I felt particularly affected this time, because this friend was not just another acquaintance. I managed to get close to her in a relatively short amount of time, and thanks to the group of friends we mutually shared, my eyes were opened to many values like supporting my country. Little did I know that she would be visiting us faster than anybody could say, “Malasimbo.”
I first met June Jumao-as when she was the vocalist of former indie rock band, Goodmorning High Fives. They were nothing short of interesting, with their unique yet appealing sound clinging to my memory. Intrigued by their music, I was lucky enough to bump into June when I was with a common friend, who ended up introducing us. From that moment on, I witnessed her transformation as an artist and as a person as well.
June is a full-blooded Pinay who was born and raised in the United States. She grew up in Dallas, Texas and came right back to her roots for college. Some may know her as a music production student from De La Salle College of Saint Benilde, others still see her as that edgy rock star singer, today however she is known as June Marieezy.
Currently an artist with Deeper Manila Records, she joined the local independent music label because of the common vision they shared: To inspire dedicated artists by pushing quality art—especially in the Philippines. Spearheaded by Justin de Guzman (JDG) and Kass Ilagan, Deeper Manila continues empowering the industry with a house, jazz, and hip-hop kind of feel that contributes greatly to the future of music locally and even worldwide. Budding musicians like August Wahh, Similarobjects, Raw, and more, are other unique artists that help make this label special. Through much hard work and dedication, the company has been striving for that recognition they deserve. Fortunately an opportunity presented itself in the form of an event called Malasimbo.
Malasimbo is a music and arts festival annually held in Puerto Galera that has been labeled as the Asian version of Coachella by quite a number of people. Handed the privilege to perform at such an event, June flew back to the Philippines to have her time on that stage, eager to show the best of what she had to offer the music community today.
Donning her trademark feather earring and her new bohemian look, she took the stage on the last night of the event. She treated it like any other performance, but the anticipation was what really racked her nerves. Being able to sing in Malasimbo was both a blessing and a challenge. Deciding to step out of her comfort zone, she agreed to perform with a live band instead of the usual show of her singing over beats by JDG. The struggle came in putting a whole group together and working with the band in such a short amount of time. On the day of the performance, she did not fail to deliver, being nothing but herself. Her mesmerizing voice, relaxing sound, and striking appearance were more than enough to fascinate the crowd. Their appreciation for her music was evident when the audience demanded for an encore.
The entire event was one big learning experience that was definitely worth the travel for those who were able to participate. It was good exposure for the artists in the sense of publicity, and also as a glimpse of what its like to work in the real world.
With that said, where the music industry expands, the immense surge of competition flows. That’s why all passionate artists, like June herself, aim to make sure that good music never goes unnoticed, and events like Malasimbo make this goal p - By: Gabrielle O. "Are You Feeling This | SXSW 2012 Edition: June Marieezy, Bright Moments, Cotton Jones, and Mother Falcon"

Lots of songs never make it to the radio that are getting lots of attention online. Live tracks, sanctioned and unsanctioned remixes, mash-ups, overlooked gems by unsigned artists. Every week on “Are You Feeling This,” we invite you to hear what the buzz is all about. You tell us what you think. Vote in the 'Are You Feeling This' poll, and leave a comment.

I just returned from SXSW in Austin and I heard and saw a lot of music. The music was overwhelming but amazing. This week's "Are You Feeling This" takes at look 4 artists that performed at SXSW and that I'm knew very little about but thought their music was very interesting.

First, we have an artist that spent some time in Manila, Philipines by the name of June Marieezy and I met at a showcase at SXSW. Followed by a band from Austin called Mother Falcon, who I caught perform at the Israel Beach Party at SXSW. Mother Falcon consists of over 20 members. From Cumberland, Maryland, the group Cotton Jones with their unique blend of psyhedelic soul and indie pop. Finally, out of New York, is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Kelly Pratt called Bright Moments. His song sound like there are 10 band members, but he recorded all the instruments on his debut release on Luaka Bop (same label as Milwaukee's Kings Go Forth).

Listen to all the songs and let us know which one you are feeling the most. - Radio Milwaukee (03/20/12)

"June Marieezy releases new track, Summertime"

Hello, freaks of the universe. It’s bikini season once again and I’m sure you’re all looking for a new summer anthem to jam to. Well, I think I’ve got the right fix. Something that’ll take that beach moment to a WHOLE. NUTHA. LEVEL.

Remember June Marieezy? The girl with the awesome vocals on that Sometimes track? Yeah well, she just released a new single called Summertime.

Click on the image to get the song on Beatport

JDG, one of the geniuses behind Deeper Manila, was cool enough to send me the track. And IT. IS. FRESH. Summertime is one of those songs you can beach-bum and knock down a few beers to. The chorus bit, which sounds like a glass of ice cubes bumping against one another, is pretty cool. The rhythm is relaxing, making everything around you calm and sound. Summertime is hypnotic.

The music drowns you. And as the song unravels, you’re left with no other choice but to soak it all in. ’Infectious’ isn’t the right word, but it’s the first word that comes to mind. If tranquility was a song, it would be Summertime. No gas, just truth.

Of course, you’d have to get a copy of the single for you to even understand all the shit I’ve been saying. You can cop Summertime on Beatport (www.beatport.com/release/summertime/881874) for a couple of bucks. I’m sure it’s gonna be worth it.

"Out of Scratch Presents: The Goodnesss"

I can’t really express how grateful I am to be able to work with people who are passionate about what they do and has the talent to go along with it. It is such a blessing for me to be able to share with you these things that I see almost everyday. In this video check out my friend June Marieezy as she shares her god given talent to the rest of the world while the homie NixDamnP backed it up with some swag of his own. Watch how these kids from Manila change the game and make you realize that you can do anything if you do something about it. - Out of Scratch (05/05/11)

"Out of Scratch x Soul Fillet"

I got a lot of respect for people who look for the best in others, that is why it was a no brainer for me to make a video for Soul Fillet because its main intention is to help local artists from Manila get that exposure that they need, and to be able to contribute to that movement is more than enough for me. My friend J-hoon started SOUL FILLET about a year ago to help create a platform for local artists to showcase their stuff. Ever since Soul Flllet started I saw an increasing amount of talent rise from the kids of Manila. - Out of Scratch (07/17/11)

"Album Review: June Marieezy, Heavy Eyes EP"

Last June 18, June Marieezy released her EP entitled Heavy Eyes under Deeper Manila, managed by Justin de Guzman and Kass Ilagan. The album’s got three tracks: Heavy Eyes, Happiness is Free and Sometimes (featuring RBTO).

June Marieezy is a young singer-songwriter whose musical style coincides with the fusion of hiphop, jazz and soul. The first time I heard her sing, I was in awe. Her hypnotic voice slung me in like a rodeo bull. She reminds me of Erykah Badu. And as I’ve said before, sounds like a much slicker, cooler, hiphop version of Adele. No gas, just truth.

At a recent gig at Saguijo, I was fortunate enough to be given a copy of Heavy Eyes. And I was pretty much excited to listen to it the minute I got home. I popped in the CD, plugged in my headphones and I was gone. The music took me to another place. I was in a trance, like a witch had cast a spell on me.

Heavy Eyes is soothing, something you can chill out to, especially after a long busy day. Music you can definitely have bleeding through your speakers when lounging at home or driving around in your car. The fine balance of hiphop and soul was as smooth as a baby’s skin. It was refreshing.

All three tracks left me half-conscious. I was dazed and the album had me craving for more. June’s charming vocals and lyrics mixed with doses of JDG‘s creative beats provide a breath of fresh air. A break from all the noise we’ve been hearing on the airwaves today. Yes, this is real music. And the fact that they’re both only 20 years old, is amazingly unbelievable.

I was extremely astounded how vocally talented she is, capable of creating such beautiful, relaxing music. Heavy Eyes is proof that June Marieezy has just scratched the surface. And she’s poised to accomplish more. Deeper Manila is bound to release another song from June sometime this week titled Collision, featuring RAW (another cat you definitely shouldn’t sleep on).

If you want to preview the tracks from Heavy Eyes, you can listen to them here. You can get a copy of the album at June’s gigs for only Php 150. Check out the Facebook pages of June Marieezy and Deeper Manila to get updates on her gig schedules.

"DPRMNL x June Marieezy release music video for ‘Sometimes’"

It’s finally out! Deeper Manila just released the music video for June Marieezy‘s most popular track, Sometimes. The song, which features RBTO, was one of my favorite tracks from last year. And until now, it actually still is.

Hot damn! That voice is silkier than Ray Allen’s stroke. JUNE MARIEEZY IS LEGIT. Of course, none of this would be possible without the mastermind behind the insane beats, Justin de Guzman. JDG, stand up! And props to the people who produced, directed and edited the video.
If you didn’t get the chance to hear June’s Heavy Eyes EP (check my review HERE), you’ve been deprived of good music. Forealzies, that shit cray! The mesh between DPRMNL and Marieezy is tight… like a perm.

Speaking of wonderful music, June will come out with another EP (which will be free BT-dub) before releasing a full-length album, something everyone should definitely watch out for. In the meantime, you can check out her latest song Think About, which you can download HERE.

Sidenote: Also check out JDG’s beat tapes. Dude is a G-E-N-I-U-S. Hundred of sick beats, all for free!

If you’re tired of hearing all the crappy shit on the radio, go visit deepermanila.com, and I fuckin’ guarantee you’ll love their music.

Follow DPRMNL and June Marieezy on Facebook for regular updates. - Pizza & Beer (Jan 8, 2012)

"DEEPER MANILA "Sometimes" MUSIC VIDEO"

Approximately a year ago, I featured this song and put RBTO's verse on here - and well - Junemariezy has been a household name in the scene. She graced us with a cameo on the Dominic Nuesa x LDP video "Here To Own It" and closed the year with a great song and performance of "Catch You" with Rjay Ty. Unfortunately, she is now based in Dallas, TX. She had her reasons to move, but with the release of this video just a few days ago - there has been a shout for her to come back. Part of Deeper Manila's artist roster, we are expecting more unreleased songs from her to be dropping throughout the year as she makes her way back to the loving scene that nurtured her.

Enjoy this visual treat!

JUNE MARIEEZY is Deeper Manila’s latest import with her stunning three-track hip-hop/soul debut “Heavy Eyes”.

Manila's culture itself has a big impact on June’s writing influences as she fell in love with her country, learned how to cope with the dirty city, and alternatively sipped on coconut juice on the surreal islands. TOGETHER WITH DEEPER MANILA head honcho, Justin de Guzman, June Marieezy puts into sound her various experiences in Manila, making “Heavy Eyes” a compilation of soundtracks tailor-made for relaxing people after a long stressful day in the urban jungle..
