"On JunioR and Another Slice of Austin HipHop"

As it currently stands, Austin might consider itself on the outside of the Texas rap landscape. Houston prioritizes itself first, Dallas may offer a far more interesting collection of talent but Austin and its not so distant neighbor San Antonio seemingly have to fight even harder for media attention. For every League Of Extraordinary G’z, M.i, Kydd and others, there are those like Junior, a dreadlocked upstart with plenty of upside who believes his name is on the verge of joining those as the kingpins of hip-hop in his locality.

Well, first he actually has to realize such moments. Martin McFly Junior bleeds the slight modernist movement rap has infatuated itself with – a smattering of high kickdrums and bass guitars with a sense of purpose and wit attached to it. He knows his youth, he knows what’s currently making waves and doesn’t shy away from it. It’s not a crusade to be completely original but rather fixate himself alongside others and cleverly make the statement, “I can make music like these guys, only more direct. And you will enjoy the hell out of it.”

With Kydd & Jonathas among the notable guests, Martin McFly Junior feels like it took a year to complete, a ton of ideas reworked around and edited just for this one particular project. Like most debuts, everything here feels like it was made to be considered definitive, less saccharine and harder, sometimes more intricate and impulsive. Junior may look like a nondescript rapper with locked dreads but he most certainly has an idea of what he wants to create. Rough around the edges and capable of rolling farther than the Kush & OJ like trance that some have described him for having, Junior knows he’s capable of making an even more engaging product – even if Martin McFly Junior is a pretty damn good introduction. - Brandon Caldwell

"JunioR - Martin McFly JunioR"

Coming from the live music capitol of Austin, Tx, it wasn’t hard for Junior to find music. After a pair of mixtape releases Junior debuted his most complete and acclaimed project “Martin McFly Junior”. Its release opened up several opportunities, including a noteworthy SXSW 2013 presence as well as opening for Kendrick Lamar the same year. Today Junior unveils the video for Martin McFly Junior (Intro). Check it out! - eldorado2452

"JunioR - Martin McFLy JunioR [audio & download]"

Almost 7 months ago, November 2 to be exact, we introduced an artist and a concept to DNW that will finally be fulfilled today. The Road to Martin McFly Junior Juniormentary revealed many details of the recording process and how serious and passionate about this project Austin’s Junior was when piecing it together. I was graced an advance copy a few weeks back and I must say his efforts didn’t go unrecognized. The sound of MMJ is unique and rich in originality and quality. From the intro track to the end, I was engaged. His witty flow over bangin beats kinda put me in the mind frame of Wiz Khalifas classic “Kush & OJ”. Take a listen and let us know what ya’ll think about Junior’s 3rd effort. #DOPESH*T! – @stackmoses - Stack Moses

Bio

Coming from the live music capital of the world has been a blessing and a curse for Austin artist Junior Flexwell. “On one hand the world knows of my birthplace, but on the other hand knowledge of my city’s potential for rap is obscure…” he says of his hometown. Nevertheless, he’s crafting a working model and is being hailed as one of his city’s most underrated acts.

His most recent EP, Ralph JunioR, was the culmination of a momentous time for the emcee. Leading up to its release he founded the Seven Ate Seven Family, began working for the biggest independent talent curator in his state, and shared the stage with artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Kirko Bangz, Father, Curren$y, Trae and others.

Junior's music is available online but he also mail orders physical copies and even hand to hands his music locally with the help of the Seven Ate imprint.  “We make the music available for free digitally and really clean up nicely from physicals and live shows…”  he says of his business template. Time will tell where this visionary goes next.
