"JUNK…….It’s not garbage; it’s Blues Music that’s Incredible!"

When you stop to think about music, what do you think of? Is it a song, a group, an era or genre? Music is different for everyone, typically. So what happens when the forces align, to bring individuals together that has creativeness, vision, talent and a desire to fill the void of entertainment that is more than just music? You get JUNK!

JUNK is a group of five musicians that has a multitude of talent. Marten Niner (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, and Harmonica) and Jim Cunningham (bass) meet many years ago and instantly discovered their lost brotherhood souls. They both agreed early what mission they wanted to accomplish with music, but the question was how? Marten and Jim formed a band prior to JUNK that just didn’t align, so the band dissolved and both agreed to advance their musical talents. It was while at Desert Ridge Music Academy that the Universe had a hand in making their vision a reality.

Brett Phillips (lead guitar), instructor at Desert Ridge Music Academy, instantly bonded with Marten and Jim. It wasn’t long when Brett realized that Marten and Jim’s musical vision was exactly what he was after. The three meet and practiced religiously at the studio. Owners Charge Michael (Drums, Rhythm Guitar) and Dave Gary (Drums, Percussion) of Desert Ridge Music Academy, heard these sessions at the academy and signed up for the venture as well. All the key elements were now in place, the planets aligned and JUNK was born.

JUNK takes a basic composition map of music, and then combines a multitude of musical styles, while each performer creates their own improvisational groove and fuses it all together. The audiences are mesmerized while this band performs its version of Blues. JUNK is creation in motion.

JUNK isn’t just music, it’s a show. The band goes one step beyond and encourages other professional entertainers to perform along with them, dubbed “The JUNKyard” the like includes; harmonicas, double bass, tap dancers, xylophones, saxophones, and guest vocalists. Each additional performer escalates the performance to an even higher entertainment quality.

The combination of improvisational music and additional performers, guarantees that no two shows are alike. Each show, with audience responsiveness, takes on a life of its own. If you haven’t seen these guys yet, what are you waiting for? The next show for JUNK will be at Dave and Buster’s at Desert Ridge Mall, May 22nd. They will be performing along with the multi winning Blues band, The Sugar Thieves. The two bands will be joining forces at the end of the show, which could be Blues Bliss for the musical lover!

Bio

JUNK is best summed up as "A little Jam, a little Funk".

JUNK was formed by a group of experienced musicians who had played together in a previous life, while all working on separate projects. These five musicians each play a multitude of instruments, prefer an improvisational groove, and have a damn good time playing together. In late 2008 they came together, and JUNK was born.

JUNK’s highly anticipated first live performance was sold out. With a combined musical experience of over 100 years they have quite a few built in fans, and an uncommon sound that will quickly reach more.

Their live shows are built on a framework of original songs and some uniquely arranged covers. JUNK excels at fusing dozens of musical styles together while striving to play their songs antithetically each time they are performed. There is a definite vibe in the way that JUNK performs, that allows the audience to feel the love of creating music that these musicians are sharing.

In addition, they have a score of professional musicians in a larger group called the JUNKyard. Several of these artists participate in the shows to add something extraordinary to the moment, and raise the level of entertainment. Electric harmonicas, double bass, tap dancers, xylophones, saxophones, violins, and trumpets. No two JUNK shows are the same, and their songs tend to have a life of their own.

This isn't just a band playing some music, JUNK is a show.

Front man, Marten Niner, adds his 25 years of improv experience to the show as well. Not only does JUNK add elements of comedy into the show, but they make it a point to engage the audience and make them part of a unique musical event. An engaged audience is undoubtedly a returning audience.

To describe what JUNK sounds like would be an impossible task. It would be like telling you what chocolate tastes like if you've never had it. You've come this far - why not listen to a few tracks.
