"Live Rock on a Small Bankroll"

The name on the marquee was Air Supply, and the line went halfway down the block. It was Saturday night at the B. B. King Blues Club & Grill on 42nd Street in Manhattan, and I had no ticket. But I walked right in.

Snob that I am, I was not there for Air Supply. (Although, in truth, “Lost in Love gets heavy play on my iPod.) I was there for the band at Lucille’s, a restaurant within B. B. King’s that often has notable blues acts and doesn’t charge for entry. The attraction this night was neither bluesy nor very notable: a local covers group called Just the Tip. But as I bobbed my head to Bad Company and Black Crowes songs, I couldn’t have been more pleased. I was warm, I was being entertained and I hadn’t paid a dime.

New York is a paradise of live music, but much of it can be discouragingly expensive. Tickets for the major concert halls typically start at $40 or $50 and rocket upward from there. Even in clubs it’s not unusual to pay $25 or $30 to see a hot touring band.

But in a kind of alternate universe for the modestly compensated (and the merely stingy) the city also has a vast network of bars and restaurants that waive a cover charge. At most you may be asked to buy a drink, but as I found in seven nights of budget-conscious concert hopping, waitresses and tip jars can be avoided, if you can bear the guilt. In 27 sets at 22 rooms, I paid a total of $30 for drinks and donations, and only $18 of that was compulsory — a few times I was just thirsty. - The New York Times

"Just The Tip Acoustic Takes Over Gaslight"

Just the Tip Acoustics took the mic last night August 5th for Gaslight’s Live Music Thursdays. Breaking away from the six-piece cover band that packs NYC venues, lead singer Eric DeLange and guitarist Chris Tino, moonlight acoustically without the electric, were showing off the Tip’s softer side. It was nothing but a good time from these guys. (DeLange even gave a little extra pizzazz with his harmonica.) The Boken and many others enjoyed some good rock and classic rock tunes from the likes of Tom Petty, The Stones, Steve Miller Band and The Killers—just to name a few.

With the “A” Team behind the bar serving drinks, Victoria and Deb two of Hoboken’s finest bartenders, we all enjoyed drink specials for the entire evening with no cover charge to partake in the fun. This left you no excuse not to come out and hang with two guys while they sit on bar stools crooning your favs.
The Boken looks forward to seeing “Just The Tip Band” again soon.

Bio

Thank you for your interest in Just the Tip, a premier party band of the NY/NJ metropolitan area. In the short time since its formation, the TIP has rocketed to the forefront of the NYC party scene, accelerated by its high-energy performances and popular song selections. The band delivers a sing-out-loud brand of rock music intended to captivate the crowd and keep them partying all night long.

Just the Tip is a six-piece rock and classic rock cover band encompassing a wide range of song favorites, from AC/DC and the Stones to the Killers and Pearl Jam. Recognized for their cohesive sound and engaging shows, the TIP has developed a substantial following in both the local bar scene and more upscale private events. The band's consistently packed shows have caught the attention of talent buyers around the region, with invitations coming from namesake venues such as BB King's Blues Club, The Knitting Factory and even the Ohio State University.

In contrast to the ubiquity of Top 40 cover bands scattered throughout the area, Just the Tip strikes a balance between new and old, while avoiding the tunes that have been systematically beaten to death for the past two decades. When you catch a TIP show, you won't see a group of night crawlers on stage wearing grimy black t-shirts and flashing arm-length tattoos. They don't take the classic songs that you love and grind them out with punk rock beats until you can't tell one song from the next. No, Just the Tip is a jeans-and-t-shirt, meat-and-potatoes, Fred-and-Wilma-Flintstone rock band delivering your favorite tunes the way you want to hear them.

Be sure to check out the demo tracks and videos at the top of the page, which should provide a glimpse into the band's style and versatility.
