Justin Klump to release new EP, “Something for September”
Portland, OR -- October 11, 2006 -- Portland’s own acoustic phenom, Justin Klump, is slated to release his new EP, “Something for September”. A seasoned musician, Justin has opened for artists such as Matt Nathanson (previously of Universal Records), Ari Hest (Columbia Records), and Vancouver’s own Hyper Static Union (RTK Records). This new EP solidifies Justin’s place as a true force to be reckoned with in Portland’s music scene. Though his music is probably most easily described as acoustic/pop, his fresh new sound is unlike anything else on the radio today. His intricate guitar riffs, laced with a funky beat and soulful melodies make it hard to deny his great future in the industry. In 2003, Justin was named one of the Top 21 Artists Under 21 by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The PI’s own D. Parvaz claimed, “(Justin’s) Acoustic guitar and heart-on-sleeve lyrics will make you wish you’d never stopped keeping that personal journal.”
To celebrate the release of the new EP, there will be a CD release show on Saturday, October 28. The evening will include ways to win a free copy of the new EP, as well as a performance by Justin with full band.

Here's a young man whose voice and guitar play will knock your socks off. "Suspicion" is a lyrically moving tune which delivers a heartfelt message. The simple and light drums with the acoustic guitar are simply phenomenal. Keeping thing simple and down to earth he continues his journey of light drums, acoustic guitar and adds in some bass play and a fantastic female voice on "Actually". "Silhouette" simply takes the cake, the guitar work is mesmerizing. The lyrics are real and many can relate too. The female voice returns adding some flavor to the emotional track. This guy has a set of pipes on him and the mellow sound to him will have women swooning in no time.

Hard to believe this kid’s only 23 years old. This is a sharp debut, with solid production, intelligent lyrics, and a strong, scrappy vocal that flows upward into some sweet high notes and infuses sincerity into every yearning track.
The lyrics are the most noticeable aspect of Klump’s songwriting. The opening track, “Suspicion,” is a good example. “So hard to reconcile all these bitter feelings toward her when she said herself she wasn’t sure change was what she wanted. That just magnified her fears.” I’d put that in stanza form, but I’m not sure where to break the lines. The singing is as urgent and straightforward as the words, but they avoid being overbearing. These songs are deeply emotional without crossing the line into acoustic emo territory.
The musicianship is solid, with warm acoustic guitar alternating with melancholy piano playing as the driving sound behind each track. The standout is the hypnotic, seven-minute piano ballad “Painter’s Son” that closes the EP. It’s heartache of a song about an artist yearning for a woman he can’t have. Klump looks into people’s hearts and souls, and he manages to put some of the most conflicting feelings into words.
The only suggestion I can make is that “Painter’s Son” needs to be put into the middle of the song order to break up the mood a bit. The first half of the EP has pretty much the same tempo and feel. When I first played this, I was cooking dinner while it played in the background, and after a while it occurred to me that I’d been hearing the same song for the past 20 minutes. Putting the very different “Painter’s Son” in the middle would give the listener a chance to pause and breathe, and putting one of the other tracks on the end would let the EP finish on an uptempo note. Just a suggestion for an otherwise very impressive debut by a young artist who you’d swear had been around the block a few more times than he has. - Indie-Music.com

A small-town Washington native, singer/songwriter Justin Klump picked up his first guitar at the age of 15. By the time a year had passed, he had successfully spent more than 3,000 hours practicing the guitar as well as writing a number of original songs. Now at the age of 23, Justin has taken a road less traveled for a teen, immersing himself in the rigors of classical guitar study. For the past 4 years, Klump has been playing numerous colleges, venues and festivals as both a headliner and support. He has opened for artists including Matt Nathanson (Universal Records), Ari Hest (Columbia Records) and Hyperstatic Union (RKT Records). Justin recently won the Acoustic Battle of the Bands contest at Washington State University, beating out a multitude of contestants from across the Northwest Region.
Justins hallmark style was recognized when he won consecutive titles at the WMEA Regional Classical Guitar competition in 2000 and 2001. He was later named one of the Top 21 Artists under 21 by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer proclaiming [Justins] acoustic guitar and heart-on-sleeve lyrics will make you wish youd never stopped keeping that personal journal." Klump has seamlessly bridged the gap between folk, pop and rock while incorporating the sounds of such influential artists as Dave Matthews, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Nickel Creek and Damien Rice. Justin adds to the mix a soothing combination of skillful guitar and piano, creating a unique musical sound all of his own.
Klump has just recently released a new EP entitled Something For September in which the 6 tracks showcase his talent and passion for expressing his heart through his music.
