"Down With the Ship - EP review"

It's impossible to dislike Just Like Always, even if you've given away your Taking Back Sunday shirts and tried as best as you can to purge yourself of your "emo days." Their control over the pop medium is something amazing to behold. You can try to be cool, but your foot is already tapping along; the easiest option is just to accept the fact that there's something about melodic post-hardcore music that you will always love, and that Just Like Always have perfected it.

Bio

Remember when Rock and Roll was about good times and even better music? Well, Just Like Always is one pop-rock band on a mission to remind the world one song at a time. Based out of the Washington, D.C. area, Just Like Always has started carving their own niche in the local music scene through the release of two EPs, constant gigging, radio airplay, and its uncompromising belief that rock can still be fun.

Often described as "everything that is right with rock and roll," Just Like Always' music is marked by its catchy hooks, clever lyrics, and relentless passion. Fusing today's pop-punk sound with yesterday's relaxed attitude, JLA has developed a style all of their own. Drawing from such influences that range from Green Day to Jimmy Eat World to Ben Folds to Fall Out Boy, the boys have created a sound that is fresh, but still familiar enough to make you feel like JLA has been your favorite band for years. And if the records don't convince you of this, catching a live show certainly will. With an energy level that is near impossible to match and a knack for getting the crowd involved, this is one band that will remind you that when it comes to music, the fan is just as important as the band playing it.

The band first formed in late 2005, but did not truly begin in its current form until June 2006, when newly recruited singer Charlie Hodgson, in his first performance with Just Like Always, led the band to the title of the Emergenza Festivals Best Band in Washington D.C.

Just Like Always released its first eponymous EP in Fall 2007. The self titled EP's single, Warning, was an instant hit among fans and has received regular airplay on DC101's local band show, Local Lix. Just Like Always released its sophomore effort, Down With the Ship, in Winter 2008, and has been extremely well received with local buzz and rave reviews. The first single K.I.T, has also received Local Lix airplay, and has received more than 100 plays a day on the band's MySpace profile.

In the coming months Just Like Always looks to expand its fan base and its efforts outside of the D.C. metropolitan area into Southern Virginia, New Jersey, New York and beyond.
