Bio
Stephen (Steve Marshall) is a singer/songwriter, composer and producer. As co-founder of Pyramid Arts in 1983 he performed, recorded and wrote with artists from around the world, including Clifford Jarvis (USA), Alan Weekes (UK), Ernest Mothle (South Africa), and Jimmy Scott (Nigeria). These early associations with jazz, reggae, soul, RnB, Afro-fusion, rock and electronic music were a great foundation.
He set up State of Emergency with Deborah Baddoo in 1986, which marked the beginning of a long association with dance theatre. In 2011/12 his score for Desert Crossings achieved critical acclaim, and the show toured in South Africa, Canada, Germany and the UK. Most recently, he composed the score for dance theatre shows Love&Sex (2013/14), Choices & Consequences (2015) and is now working in collaboration with South African Grammy winner Wouter Kellerman on the soundtrack to Where Is Home?
Between 2002 and 2010 he produced albums with Lee “Scratch” Perry. Two of these received Grammy nominations. Working with Lee led to projects with Keith Richards and George Clinton. In 2014 he contributed to Keith Richards' cover of the Gregory Isaacs classic, Love Overdue. Recent visits to South Africa, the USA and Japan have helped to build his reputation as an original artist.
